Practice and mock-exam modes need JavaScript. You can still study with the full question list below — answers and explanations are folded under each question.

How the real written test works

In Korea, the written test has 40 questions on a computer at a testing center. Class 1 requires 70 or more and Class 2 requires 60 or more. Some questions have one correct answer and some have two, and some are based on photos or videos.

Practice by topic

Questions are divided into eight topics: signals and signs, rules of the road, speed and distance, safe driving, penalties, vehicle care, accidents and emergencies, and motorcycles and personal mobility. Pick your weak topics and focus on them.

40-question mock exam

The mock exam draws 40 questions from all topics. When you finish, it shows your score and whether you cleared the Class 1 (70) and Class 2 (60) pass marks. It is good practice for working through a full test in one go.

Wrong-answer notebook

Questions you get wrong are saved on this device so you can redo them in the wrong-answer notebook. Repeating until you get them right clears up confusing rules. Each explanation covers why the answer is correct and why common wrong answers are wrong.

TIPUnderstand the reasons in the explanations rather than memorizing answers. The real test asks about the same principles even when the wording and situations change.

Please note

These questions are original practice items based on the Road Traffic Act and official guidance, not actual test items. The official question bank is available from the Korea Road Traffic Authority's Safe Driving Civil Service portal.

Signals & signs 35

  1. 1.The light turns from green to yellow when the front of your car is already inside the intersection. What should you do?

    1. Stop right where you are
    2. Reverse back behind the stop line
    3. Proceed promptly and clear the intersection
    4. Wait inside the intersection until the light turns red
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Proceed promptly and clear the intersection

In Korea, if any part of the vehicle has already entered the intersection when the light turns yellow, the driver must promptly proceed out of it. Stopping in the middle or reversing blocks cross traffic and is more dangerous.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  2. 2.You are approaching an intersection with plenty of distance left to the stop line when the light turns yellow. What is correct?

    1. Stop just before the stop line
    2. Speed up to get through quickly
    3. Cross the stop line and stop on the crosswalk
    4. Sound the horn and keep going
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Stop just before the stop line

In Korea, if you have not yet entered the intersection on a yellow light, you must stop just before the stop line (or before the crosswalk or intersection if there is no line). Accelerating to beat the light easily leads to a signal violation or a crash.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  3. 3.The vehicle signal at an intersection is flashing red. What must the driver do?

    1. Pass through while driving slowly
    2. Make a brief full stop just before the stop line, then proceed with care for other traffic
    3. Stay stopped until it turns green
    4. Only right turns are allowed; going straight is not
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Make a brief full stop just before the stop line, then proceed with care for other traffic

In Korea, a flashing red light means you must come to a brief full stop before the stop line or crosswalk (or before the intersection), then proceed while watching other traffic. Merely slowing down is not enough, and since a flashing light does not cycle to green, there is no need to keep waiting.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  4. 4.Late at night, the vehicle signal at an intersection is flashing yellow. Which statement is correct?

    1. You must always make a full stop at the stop line
    2. It means the intersection is closed to traffic
    3. The signal is broken, so wait for the police
    4. You may proceed while paying attention to other traffic and signs
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — You may proceed while paying attention to other traffic and signs

In Korea, a flashing yellow light means you may proceed while paying attention to other traffic and to traffic signs. The obligation to stop applies to a flashing red light. You still have a duty of care, so slow down and check both sides.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  5. 5.At an intersection without an unprotected-left-turn sign, the vehicle signal shows a round green light. Which movements are allowed?

    1. Straight ahead only
    2. Straight ahead or a right turn
    3. Straight, left and right turns
    4. Left turn only
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Straight ahead or a right turn

In Korea, on a round green light vehicles may go straight or turn right. A left turn requires a green left arrow, or a location marked with an unprotected-left-turn sign. When turning right, you must not obstruct pedestrians.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  6. 6.At an intersection with an unprotected-left-turn sign, how should you turn left?

    1. Turn on a red light if there is no oncoming car
    2. Hurry to turn the moment the light turns yellow
    3. Turn on a green light without obstructing oncoming traffic
    4. You may turn at any time regardless of the signal
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Turn on a green light without obstructing oncoming traffic

In Korea, an unprotected left turn is made on a green light, only when it does not obstruct oncoming straight-through traffic. Turning left on red is a signal violation. If cars are coming, wait until they have passed.

  7. 7.At an intersection that has a separate right-turn signal (arrow signal), when may you turn right?

    1. When the right-turn signal shows a green arrow
    2. When the main signal is red and no pedestrians are present
    3. Even on a red right-turn signal, as long as you stopped first
    4. Any time the yellow arrow is lit
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — When the right-turn signal shows a green arrow

In Korea, since 22 January 2023, where a right-turn signal is installed you may turn right only when it shows a green arrow. If the right-turn signal is red, you must not turn, even after stopping.

  8. 8.At an intersection without a right-turn signal, the vehicle signal is red. How should you turn right?

    1. Turn slowly without stopping
    2. You may never turn right on a red light
    3. Sound the horn to warn pedestrians, then turn
    4. Make a full stop at the stop line first, then turn without obstructing other vehicles or pedestrians
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Make a full stop at the stop line first, then turn without obstructing other vehicles or pedestrians

In Korea, where there is no right-turn signal, you may turn right on red only after first making a full stop before the stop line, crosswalk or intersection, and only without obstructing vehicles moving on their signal or pedestrians. Rolling through slowly without stopping is a violation.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  9. 9.The green pedestrian light has started flashing. What does this mean for pedestrians?

    1. They may start crossing
    2. They must not start crossing; those already crossing should finish quickly or return
    3. All vehicles will stop, so they can cross slowly
    4. The pedestrian signal is broken
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — They must not start crossing; those already crossing should finish quickly or return

In Korea, a flashing green pedestrian light means the signal is about to change: pedestrians must not start crossing, and those already crossing should finish promptly or go back to the sidewalk. Drivers should expect that some pedestrians may still be crossing late.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  10. 10.The traffic light is green, but a police officer directing traffic is signalling you to stop by hand. What should you do?

    1. The traffic light takes priority, so keep going
    2. Follow whichever is more convenient
    3. Stop as directed by the police officer
    4. Sound the horn to alert the officer, then proceed
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Stop as directed by the police officer

In Korea, when a traffic signal and the signal or instruction of a police officer directing traffic differ, you must follow the police officer. The officer is managing traffic according to the situation on the spot, such as a crash or an event.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 5

  11. 11.A lane-control signal above a lane shows a red X. What does it mean?

    1. You may not drive in that lane
    2. You must drive slowly in that lane
    3. That lane is for buses only
    4. You may make a U-turn from that lane
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — You may not drive in that lane

In Korea, a red X on a lane-control signal means vehicles may not proceed in that lane. These signals show whether a lane is open, for example on reversible lanes, in tunnels or at toll plazas, so move to an open lane in advance.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  12. 12.A lane-control signal above a lane shows a green arrow pointing down. What does it mean?

    1. You must stop in that lane
    2. The lane is about to close, so leave it
    3. Only left turns are allowed from that lane
    4. You may proceed in that lane
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — You may proceed in that lane

In Korea, a downward green arrow on a lane-control signal means you may proceed in that lane. A red X means you may not, and a flashing red X means do not enter and, if already in it, move out of the lane.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  13. 13.The lane-control signal above the lane you are driving in changes to a flashing red X. What should you do?

    1. Keep driving in that lane but slow down
    2. Do not enter the lane, and if already in it, promptly move to another lane
    3. Stop where you are and wait for the signal to change
    4. Turn on the hazard lights and continue
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Do not enter the lane, and if already in it, promptly move to another lane

In Korea, a flashing red X means you may not enter that lane, and if any part of your vehicle is already in it, you must promptly change out of it. The lane may soon be used for the opposite direction or closed, so staying in it or stopping is dangerous.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  14. 14.Under Korea's road traffic regulations, which is NOT a category of traffic safety sign?

    1. Warning signs
    2. Regulatory signs
    3. Road markings
    4. Guide signs
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ④ — Guide signs

In Korea, the Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act defines five kinds of traffic safety signs: warning, regulatory, instruction, supplementary signs and road markings. Guide signs showing place names and directions are not among them.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 8

  15. 15.What is the typical shape and colour of a warning sign that alerts drivers to hazards ahead, such as curves or slippery roads?

    1. A blue circle
    2. A white circle with a red border
    3. A yellow triangle with a red border
    4. A white rectangle
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — A yellow triangle with a red border

In Korea, most warning signs are yellow triangles with a red border. Red-bordered circles are mostly regulatory signs, blue backgrounds are used for instruction signs, and white rectangles under a main sign are typically supplementary signs.

  16. 16.Instruction signs such as 'one way' or 'bicycle-only road' tell drivers how to use the road. What background colour do they mainly use?

    1. Blue
    2. Yellow
    3. Red
    4. Black
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① — Blue

In Korea, instruction signs indicate how to use the road or how traffic is divided, and mostly use white symbols on a blue background. Yellow backgrounds are mainly for warning signs, and red borders for regulatory signs.

  17. 17.What is the role of a supplementary sign attached below a warning, regulatory or instruction sign?

    1. It cancels the main sign
    2. It supplements the main sign's meaning (time, distance, vehicle type, etc.)
    3. It shows the name of the road
    4. It is for advertising
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — It supplements the main sign's meaning (time, distance, vehicle type, etc.)

In Korea, supplementary signs add to the main sign's function by showing when, how far, over what section or to which vehicles it applies. For example, a time plate under a no-parking sign means the restriction applies during those hours.

  18. 18.What does a regulatory sign showing a white horizontal bar inside a red circle mean?

    1. Stop
    2. No parking
    3. No entry
    4. No overtaking
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — No entry

In Korea, a red circle with a white horizontal bar is the 'no entry' sign, placed where vehicles are prohibited from entering, such as the exit end of a one-way street. Do not enter in that direction; find another route.

  19. 19.At an intersection with a red octagonal 'stop' sign, what must the driver do?

    1. Come to a full stop just before the stop line, check for safety, then proceed
    2. Just slow down; no need to stop
    3. Stop only if other vehicles are visible
    4. Sound the horn and proceed
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Come to a full stop just before the stop line, check for safety, then proceed

In Korea, the stop sign marks a place where vehicles must come to a brief full stop. Even if no other vehicles are visible, stop the wheels completely, check left and right, then proceed. Merely slowing down is a violation.

  20. 20.A solid yellow centre line runs down the middle of the road. Which statement is correct?

    1. You may cross it to overtake a slow vehicle
    2. You may cross it to make a U-turn if no oncoming car is present
    3. It may not be crossed only at night
    4. Vehicles must not cross it
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Vehicles must not cross it

In Korea, a solid yellow centre line separates opposing traffic and must not be crossed. Crossing it to overtake or make a U-turn is a centre-line violation and can lead to head-on collisions.

  21. 21.Which statement about a broken (dashed) yellow centre line is correct?

    1. It may never be crossed
    2. You may cross it temporarily, e.g. to overtake, while watching for oncoming traffic
    3. You may cross it and keep driving in the opposite lane
    4. Only buses may cross it
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — You may cross it temporarily, e.g. to overtake, while watching for oncoming traffic

In Korea, a dashed yellow centre line may be crossed temporarily, for example to overtake, while paying attention to oncoming traffic. You must have a clear view ahead and not be in a no-overtaking location, and you must return to your lane as soon as you have passed.

  22. 22.Lanes going in the same direction are separated by a solid white line. What may you NOT do in this section?

    1. Change into the adjacent lane
    2. Go straight along your lane
    3. Keep a safe distance from the car ahead
    4. Drive within the speed limit
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Change into the adjacent lane

In Korea, a solid white line between lanes in the same direction restricts lane changes. It is usually marked where changing lanes is dangerous, such as just before intersections, in tunnels or on bridges, so choose your lane earlier where the line is dashed.

  23. 23.What colour of road marking is used to separate a designated traffic stream, such as a bus-only lane?

    1. White
    2. Yellow
    3. Blue
    4. Red
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — Blue

In Korea, blue road markings separate designated traffic streams, with bus-only and multi-occupancy vehicle lanes as typical examples. Yellow mainly separates opposing traffic or restricts road use, and white separates traffic in the same direction or marks edges.

  24. 24.A red marking is painted on the road edge or kerb around a fire hydrant or other firefighting facility. What does it mean?

    1. Short-term parking is allowed
    2. Both stopping and parking are prohibited
    3. You may park if no fire engine is around
    4. Parking is banned only at night
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Both stopping and parking are prohibited

In Korea, red road markings around firefighting facilities indicate a no-stopping and no-parking zone. Fire engines must be able to use the hydrant immediately in a fire, so even a brief stop is not allowed.

  25. 25.A dashed yellow line runs along the road edge (no supplementary sign). Which statement is correct?

    1. Stopping and parking are both freely allowed
    2. Stopping and parking are both prohibited
    3. Only buses may stop
    4. Parking is prohibited, but stopping is allowed
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Parking is prohibited, but stopping is allowed

In Korea, a dashed yellow edge line means no parking, while stopping that does not count as parking, such as a stop of up to five minutes, is allowed. A solid yellow edge line prohibits both stopping and parking, so remember the difference.

  26. 26.A white diamond (◇) marking is painted on the lane. What does it indicate?

    1. A pedestrian crossing ahead
    2. A railway crossing ahead
    3. This is a bus-only lane
    4. You may overtake here
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① — A pedestrian crossing ahead

In Korea, a white diamond road marking warns of a pedestrian crossing ahead. When you see it, slow down and check for pedestrians around the crosswalk.

  27. 27.At an intersection with a stop line and a crosswalk, where should you stop on a red light?

    1. On the crosswalk
    2. Just before the stop line
    3. In the middle of the intersection
    4. Slightly past the stop line
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Just before the stop line

In Korea, on a red light you must stop just before the stop line. Stopping past it or on the crosswalk blocks pedestrians and is a stop-line violation.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  28. 28.You arrive at an intersection that normally has traffic lights, but a power cut has turned them all off and no one is directing traffic. How should you proceed?

    1. With no signal, whoever enters first has priority, so speed up
    2. Treat it as green and drive through
    3. Treat it as an uncontrolled intersection: slow down or stop and follow the yielding rules
    4. Wait unconditionally until the lights come back on
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Treat it as an uncontrolled intersection: slow down or stop and follow the yielding rules

In Korea, if the signals are not working and no one is directing traffic, treat it as an intersection without traffic control. Slow down, stop if needed, and yield to vehicles already in the intersection or with priority. Speeding up to get in first greatly increases the risk of a collision.

  29. 29.The vehicle signal shows a red light together with a green left-turn arrow. Which statement is correct?

    1. You may go straight or turn left
    2. You may only go straight
    3. No movement is allowed
    4. You may turn left but not go straight
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — You may turn left but not go straight

In Korea, a green arrow lets vehicles proceed in the direction of the arrow, while the red light shown with it means going straight is not allowed. In other words, only left-turning vehicles may go.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  30. 30.The left-turn arrow changes from green to yellow. A left-turning car has not yet reached the stop line. What should it do?

    1. Stop just before the stop line
    2. Hurry to turn before the yellow arrow goes off
    3. Change direction and go straight instead
    4. Enter the intersection and wait there
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Stop just before the stop line

In Korea, on a yellow arrow, vehicles intending to go in the arrow's direction must stop before the stop line (or crosswalk or intersection). As with a round yellow light, a vehicle already partly inside the intersection should proceed promptly out of it.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  31. 31.Your light has turned green, but a pedestrian who started late is still crossing the crosswalk in front of you. What should you do?

    1. It's green, so sound the horn and go
    2. Pass quickly in front of the pedestrian
    3. Wait until the pedestrian has finished crossing, then go
    4. Go around behind the pedestrian
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Wait until the pedestrian has finished crossing, then go

In Korea, drivers must not obstruct or endanger pedestrians crossing at a crosswalk. Even if the light has changed, wait until anyone still crossing has finished. Avoid using the horn to hurry them.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 27

  32. 32.Choose the TWO regulatory signs.Choose 2

    1. No-entry sign
    2. Maximum speed limit sign
    3. One-way sign
    4. Bicycle-only road sign
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① ② — No-entry sign / Maximum speed limit sign

In Korea, the no-entry and maximum speed limit signs are regulatory signs that announce restrictions and prohibitions for road safety. One-way and bicycle-only road signs are instruction signs that tell road users how to travel.

  33. 33.You approach an intersection on a red light, but no stop line is painted. Where must you stop?

    1. In the middle of the intersection
    2. Just before the intersection (or before the crosswalk, if there is one)
    3. On the far side of the intersection
    4. No need to stop; just slow down
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Just before the intersection (or before the crosswalk, if there is one)

In Korea, on a red light you stop before the stop line if there is one; if not, stop before the crosswalk or before the intersection. The absence of a stop line does not allow you to enter the intersection.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Annex 2

  34. 34.A dashed white line separates lanes going in the same direction. Which statement is correct?

    1. It may never be crossed
    2. It separates opposing traffic
    3. Only buses may cross it
    4. You may change lanes after checking it is safe
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — You may change lanes after checking it is safe

In Korea, a dashed white line between lanes in the same direction permits lane changes. Signal in advance and change only when you will not obstruct vehicles behind or beside you. Opposing traffic is separated by the yellow centre line.

  35. 35.You approach a crosswalk to turn right. The pedestrian light is green and people are crossing (no right-turn signal). What should you do?

    1. Pass slowly through a gap between pedestrians
    2. Give a short toot of the horn and pass
    3. Stop before the crosswalk and wait until the pedestrians have finished crossing
    4. Go through if the pedestrians are at the far end of the crosswalk
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Stop before the crosswalk and wait until the pedestrians have finished crossing

In Korea, when pedestrians are crossing or about to cross at a crosswalk, drivers must stop before it (before the stop line if there is one). Even if pedestrians are on the far side, wait until they have finished crossing; squeezing through a gap can be a violation.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 27

Rules of the road 35

  1. 36.On a road with a centre line, where should vehicles normally travel?

    1. On the left side of the centre line
    2. On the right side of the centre line
    3. Anywhere on the road that is empty
    4. On the boundary between the sidewalk and roadway
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — On the right side of the centre line

Korea drives on the right: vehicles must use the part of the road to the right of the centre (or of the centre line, if marked). Using the left side is allowed only in exceptional cases such as one-way roads or a damaged road.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 13

  2. 37.In which case may a vehicle use the centre or left side of the road?

    1. When the car ahead is slower than the speed limit
    2. When the right-hand lanes are blocked by congestion
    3. When overtaking on a road whose right side is less than 6 metres wide, with a clear view of oncoming traffic and outside a no-overtaking area
    4. At night, when no oncoming headlights are visible
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — When overtaking on a road whose right side is less than 6 metres wide, with a clear view of oncoming traffic and outside a no-overtaking area

In Korea, on a road whose right-hand part is less than 6 metres wide, a driver may use the centre or left side to overtake, provided it will not obstruct oncoming traffic and the place is not a no-overtaking area. A slow car ahead or congestion alone is no reason to cross the centre line.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 13

  3. 38.What is the basic rule for overtaking the vehicle ahead?

    1. Overtake on its left
    2. Overtake on its right
    3. Overtake on whichever side is wider
    4. Overtake using the shoulder
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Overtake on its left

In Korea, overtaking is done on the left of the vehicle ahead. Pay full attention to oncoming traffic and to traffic in front of the other vehicle, use your turn signal, and keep a safe speed. Overtaking on the right or via the shoulder is a violation and very dangerous.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 21

  4. 39.Choose the TWO places where overtaking is prohibited.Choose 2

    1. Inside a tunnel
    2. A straight road with two lanes each way
    3. An intersection
    4. A straight road with good visibility and a dashed yellow centre line
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① ③ — Inside a tunnel / An intersection

In Korea, overtaking is prohibited at intersections, inside tunnels, on bridges, at bends, near the crest of a hill and on steep downhill slopes, among others. A straight road with good visibility is not, by itself, a no-overtaking place.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 22

  5. 40.The car behind you is trying to overtake. What should you, the driver being overtaken, do?

    1. Speed up so it cannot pass
    2. Move to the middle to block it
    3. Sound the horn as a warning
    4. Do not speed up or interfere with the overtaking
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Do not speed up or interfere with the overtaking

In Korea, when another vehicle is overtaking you, you must not speed up to compete or block its path. If necessary, ease off slightly so the other driver can finish overtaking quickly.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 21

  6. 41.The car in front of you is about to overtake the vehicle ahead of it. What should you do?

    1. Overtake alongside it at the same time
    2. Do not overtake it; wait until it has finished overtaking
    3. Overtake it on the right
    4. Sound the horn to make it move over
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Do not overtake it; wait until it has finished overtaking

In Korea, you may not overtake a vehicle that is overtaking or about to overtake another vehicle, nor when another vehicle is running alongside on its left. Wait until it has finished and it is safe.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 22

  7. 42.Following a police officer's instructions, a line of cars ahead is moving slowly. You are in the next lane. What must you NOT do?

    1. Move slowly at the same pace in your lane
    2. Check the officer's instructions
    3. Cut in between the cars in the line
    4. Keep a safe distance from the car ahead
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Cut in between the cars in the line

In Korea, you must not cut in front of vehicles that are stopped or moving slowly in accordance with the law or a police officer's instructions. Cutting in disrupts traffic flow and causes collisions.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 23

  8. 43.What is the correct way to turn right at an intersection?

    1. Move to the right edge of the road in advance and turn slowly
    2. Swing wide around the centre of the intersection
    3. Turn directly from the second or third lane
    4. Speed up and turn quickly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Move to the right edge of the road in advance and turn slowly

In Korea, to turn right you must move along the right edge of the road in advance and turn slowly. Turning sharply from an outer lane can easily hit motorcycles, bicycles or pedestrians on your right.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 25

  9. 44.What is the basic way to turn left at an intersection (unless otherwise designated)?

    1. Swing wide from the right edge of the road
    2. Use the outside of the intersection's centre
    3. Cross into the opposite lane beforehand
    4. Move along the centre line in advance and turn slowly, passing inside the centre of the intersection
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Move along the centre line in advance and turn slowly, passing inside the centre of the intersection

In Korea, the basic rule for a left turn is to move along the centre line in advance, slow down, and turn using the inside of the intersection's centre. Where designated by the provincial police, the outside may be used, and guide lines on the road should be followed.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 25

  10. 45.The light is green, but traffic on the far side of the intersection is backed up, so if you enter you will likely be stuck inside it. What should you do?

    1. Enter anyway because it's green
    2. Do not enter; wait before the stop line
    3. Follow closely behind the car ahead
    4. Sound the horn to hurry the car ahead
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Do not enter; wait before the stop line

In Korea, even at a signalled intersection you must not enter if traffic ahead means you are likely to stop inside it. Blocking the box stops cross traffic and can paralyse the whole intersection.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 25

  11. 46.You are about to enter an intersection without traffic control, and a car from another road has already entered and is crossing. What should you do?

    1. Yield to the car already in the intersection
    2. Enter first if your road is wider
    3. Sound the horn and enter at the same time
    4. Speed up to get through before it
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Yield to the car already in the intersection

In Korea, at an intersection without traffic control, you must yield to any vehicle that has already entered the intersection. Priority based on road width or direction applies only when no one has entered yet.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 26

  12. 47.At an intersection without traffic control, you are on a narrow road and another car is on a much wider road. You both arrive at the same time. Who must yield?

    1. The car on the wider road
    2. The slower car
    3. You, on the narrow road
    4. The smaller vehicle
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — You, on the narrow road

In Korea, at an intersection without traffic control, a driver on a road narrower than the crossing road must yield to vehicles entering from the wider road. Vehicle size or speed is not the criterion.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 26

  13. 48.At an intersection without traffic control, vehicles on two roads of equal width arrive at the same time. What is the yielding rule?

    1. Yield to the vehicle coming from the left
    2. Yield to the vehicle coming from the right
    3. Whoever honks first has priority
    4. Yield to the larger vehicle
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Yield to the vehicle coming from the right

In Korea, at an intersection without traffic control where the roads are of equal width, you must yield to vehicles entering from the road on your right. Neither the horn nor vehicle size decides priority.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 26

  14. 49.At an intersection without traffic control, you want to turn left while a car from the opposite direction is about to go straight. What should you do?

    1. Turn first because you signalled first
    2. Finish the turn faster than the oncoming car
    3. Sound the horn and go together
    4. Turn left after the straight-going car has passed
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Turn left after the straight-going car has passed

In Korea, at an intersection without traffic control, a vehicle turning left must yield to vehicles going straight or turning right. Signalling first does not give you priority.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 26

  15. 50.Which is the correct way to use a roundabout?

    1. Circulate clockwise
    2. Entering vehicles have priority over circulating vehicles
    3. Circulate counter-clockwise, and when entering, yield to vehicles already circulating
    4. Circulating vehicles must stop for entering vehicles
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Circulate counter-clockwise, and when entering, yield to vehicles already circulating

In Korea, traffic in a roundabout moves counter-clockwise. When entering, slow down or stop and yield to vehicles already circulating. Circulating vehicles have priority and do not have to stop for entering ones.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 25-2

  16. 51.A fire engine with siren and flashing lights is approaching from behind near an intersection. What should you do?

    1. Avoid the intersection and stop briefly
    2. Stop right in the middle of the intersection
    3. Accelerate to clear the intersection before the fire engine
    4. Keep driving in your lane as usual
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Avoid the intersection and stop briefly

In Korea, when an emergency vehicle approaches at or near an intersection, you must avoid the intersection and stop briefly. Stopping inside the intersection blocks its path.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 29

  17. 52.You are driving on a road with two lanes each way, away from any intersection, when an ambulance with lights and siren comes up behind. What should you do?

    1. Brake hard and stop immediately
    2. Speed up to stay ahead of it
    3. Just turn on the hazard lights in front of it
    4. Give way so the ambulance can pass first
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Give way so the ambulance can pass first

In Korea, when an emergency vehicle approaches away from an intersection, you must give way so it can pass first. Usually you move to the right lane or edge; braking hard can cause a rear-end collision.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 29

  18. 53.You plan to turn left at an intersection on an ordinary road. When should you start signalling?

    1. After entering the intersection
    2. From a point at least 30 metres before the edge of the intersection
    3. From a point 5 metres before the edge of the intersection
    4. After completing the turn
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — From a point at least 30 metres before the edge of the intersection

In Korea, when turning left or right you must start signalling at least 30 metres before reaching the edge of the intersection, and keep the signal on until the turn is complete so others know your intention in advance.

  19. 54.On an expressway, when should you start signalling before changing lanes?

    1. At the moment you change lanes
    2. 30 metres before the point of the lane change
    3. From a point at least 100 metres before the point of the lane change
    4. After finishing the lane change
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — From a point at least 100 metres before the point of the lane change

In Korea, on an expressway you must signal from at least 100 metres before the point where you intend to change course. The distance is longer than on ordinary roads (at least 30 metres) because higher speeds give following drivers less time to react.

  20. 55.You are about to cross a railway crossing with no signal. What is the correct way?

    1. Stop briefly before the crossing, check it is safe, then cross
    2. Cross slowly if no train is visible
    3. Speed up and cross quickly
    4. Follow the car ahead closely and cross together
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Stop briefly before the crossing, check it is safe, then cross

In Korea, you must make a brief full stop before a railway crossing and check it is safe before crossing. You may cross without stopping only when following a signal at the crossing. Following the car ahead too closely can leave you trapped on the tracks.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 24

  21. 56.At a railway crossing, the alarm has started ringing but the barrier is still up. What should you do?

    1. Cross quickly before the barrier comes down
    2. Cross if the train looks far away
    3. Cross slowly
    4. Stop and do not enter the crossing
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Stop and do not enter the crossing

In Korea, you must not enter a railway crossing when the barrier is down or about to come down, or when the alarm is sounding. A train's speed and distance are hard to judge by eye.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 24

  22. 57.In Korea, stopping and parking are prohibited within how many metres of the edge of an intersection or a road corner?

    1. 3 metres
    2. 5 metres
    3. 15 metres
    4. 20 metres
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — 5 metres

In Korea, it is prohibited to stop or park within 5 metres of the edge of an intersection or a road corner, because a car standing at the corner blocks the view of turning vehicles and pedestrians.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 32

  23. 58.In Korea, stopping and parking are prohibited within how many metres of a pedestrian crossing?

    1. 3 metres
    2. 5 metres
    3. 10 metres
    4. 30 metres
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — 10 metres

In Korea, it is prohibited to stop or park within 10 metres of the edge of a railway crossing or of a pedestrian crossing. A car stopped near a crosswalk hides pedestrians, especially small children, from other drivers.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 32

  24. 59.You want to stop your car briefly 5 metres from a bus-stop sign to drop someone off. Which statement is correct?

    1. You may not, because stopping and parking are banned within 10 metres of a bus-stop marker
    2. You may stop for up to five minutes
    3. You may stop if no bus is coming
    4. You may stop if you turn on the hazard lights
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — You may not, because stopping and parking are banned within 10 metres of a bus-stop marker

In Korea, stopping and parking are prohibited within 10 metres of a post, sign or line marking a bus stop (buses picking up or dropping off passengers during service hours are an exception). A private car may not stop there even briefly.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 32

  25. 60.Under Korea's Road Traffic Act, which describes 'stopping' (as distinct from parking)?

    1. The driver has left the vehicle and cannot drive it immediately
    2. The vehicle stays stopped because of a breakdown
    3. Leaving the vehicle stopped for up to 10 minutes
    4. Halting the vehicle for no more than five minutes, in a state other than parking
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Halting the vehicle for no more than five minutes, in a state other than parking

In Korea, 'stopping' means the driver halts the vehicle for no more than five minutes, in a state other than parking. Keeping the vehicle stationary continuously, or leaving it so that the driver cannot drive it immediately, counts as parking.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 2

  26. 61.What is the correct action when parking at the edge of a downhill slope?

    1. Leave it in neutral with the parking brake off
    2. Apply the parking brake and chock the wheels or turn them toward the road edge
    3. Turn the wheels toward the middle of the road
    4. Leave the engine running and step away briefly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Apply the parking brake and chock the wheels or turn them toward the road edge

In Korea, when stopping or parking on a slope you must apply the parking brake and prevent rolling, for example by placing wheel chocks or turning the steering toward the edge of the road. Wheels turned toward the middle would send a rolling car into traffic.

  27. 62.You need to cross a sidewalk to enter a building's car park. What is the correct way?

    1. Sound the horn so pedestrians move aside
    2. Speed up to cross the sidewalk quickly
    3. Stop just before the sidewalk, look both ways, then cross without obstructing pedestrians
    4. Drive straight in; vehicles have priority even if pedestrians are there
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Stop just before the sidewalk, look both ways, then cross without obstructing pedestrians

In Korea, when crossing a sidewalk to enter or leave a place off the road, you must stop just before the sidewalk, check left and right, and cross without obstructing pedestrians. Pedestrians have priority on the sidewalk.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 13

  28. 63.Under Korea's Road Traffic Act, what does 'driving slowly' (seohaeng) mean?

    1. Moving at a speed slow enough that the driver can stop the vehicle immediately
    2. Driving at 10 km/h or less only
    3. Bringing the wheels to a complete stop, then moving off
    4. Driving at half the speed limit
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Moving at a speed slow enough that the driver can stop the vehicle immediately

In Korea, 'driving slowly' means proceeding at a speed slow enough that the driver can stop immediately; it is not defined by a specific number. Bringing the wheels to a complete stop is a 'brief stop'.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 2

  29. 64.Under Korea's Road Traffic Act, what does a 'brief stop' (ilsi jeongji) mean?

    1. Reducing speed below 10 km/h
    2. Tapping the brake once
    3. Leaving the car stopped for up to five minutes
    4. Bringing the vehicle's wheels to a complete stop momentarily
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Bringing the vehicle's wheels to a complete stop momentarily

In Korea, a 'brief stop' means the driver momentarily brings the wheels to a complete stop. Merely slowing down or tapping the brake does not count.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 2

  30. 65.The expressway is congested and traffic has nearly stopped. Which statement about using the shoulder is correct?

    1. You may drive on the shoulder if congestion is heavy
    2. You must not drive on the shoulder except for emergency vehicles, breakdowns or other unavoidable cases
    3. You may use the shoulder up to the next exit
    4. You may use the shoulder if your hazard lights are on
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — You must not drive on the shoulder except for emergency vehicles, breakdowns or other unavoidable cases

In Korea, the expressway shoulder is reserved for emergency vehicles and for stopping in a breakdown. Apart from emergency vehicles and unavoidable situations such as a breakdown, you must not drive on it. Driving on the shoulder in a jam blocks ambulances and tow trucks.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 60

  31. 66.What is the correct way to merge from an expressway on-ramp (acceleration lane) into the main lanes?

    1. Build up enough speed in the acceleration lane and merge without obstructing traffic on the main road
    2. Cut in straight away, expecting main-road traffic to make room
    3. Stop at the end of the acceleration lane, then merge slowly
    4. Dive into any gap without signalling
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Build up enough speed in the acceleration lane and merge without obstructing traffic on the main road

In Korea, a vehicle entering an expressway must not obstruct vehicles already travelling on it. Accelerate in the acceleration lane to match the flow, signal, and merge into a safe gap. Stopping at the end of the acceleration lane makes merging more dangerous.

  32. 67.On an expressway, you have just missed the exit you needed. What should you do?

    1. Reverse along the shoulder back to the exit
    2. Turn on the hazard lights and reverse on the main road
    3. Continue to the next exit and leave there
    4. Make a U-turn through a gap in the central reservation
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Continue to the next exit and leave there

In Korea, crossing, U-turns and reversing are prohibited on expressways. If you miss an exit, change your route at the next exit or a rest area. Reversing on an expressway carries a very high risk of a collision with fast traffic from behind.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 62

  33. 68.Choose the TWO places where the law requires drivers to proceed slowly.Choose 2

    1. Near a bend in the road
    2. A straight section with three lanes each way
    3. A flat section of an expressway main road
    4. Near the crest of a hill
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① ④ — Near a bend in the road / Near the crest of a hill

In Korea, drivers must proceed slowly at intersections without traffic control, near bends, near the crest of a hill and on steep downhill slopes, because visibility is limited or a sudden stop may be needed. Straight sections and flat expressway lanes are not designated slow-driving places.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 31

  34. 69.A 'safety zone' is marked on the road with traffic safety markings. What must drivers observe?

    1. In congestion, you may use it as a lane
    2. You must not enter it
    3. You may use it for brief stops
    4. You may enter it only to make a U-turn
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — You must not enter it

In Korea, a safety zone is a part of the road marked for the safety of pedestrians and traffic, and vehicles must not enter safety zones where entry is prohibited by signs or markings. If pedestrians are in or near it, pass slowly at a safe distance.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 13

  35. 70.In Korea, stopping and parking are prohibited within how many metres of a fire hydrant or other firefighting water facility?

    1. 1 metre
    2. 3 metres
    3. 10 metres
    4. 5 metres
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ④ — 5 metres

In Korea, it is prohibited to stop or park within 5 metres of a firefighting water facility such as a hydrant, or an emergency fire-extinguishing device. Fire engines need immediate access to water in a fire, so do not stop there even briefly.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 32

Speed & distance 25

  1. 71.In Korea, what is the statutory maximum speed, in principle, on ordinary roads in residential, commercial and industrial areas (excluding routes specially designated by the provincial police)?

This is the '50' in the 'Safe Speed 5030' policy. If signs show a different limit, follow the signs.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  2. 72.In Korea, on an ordinary road with one lane each way outside residential, commercial and industrial areas, what is the statutory maximum speed (no speed limit sign)?

    1. 40 km/h
    2. 50 km/h
    3. 60 km/h
    4. 80 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — 60 km/h

In Korea, on ordinary roads outside residential, commercial and industrial areas, the statutory maximum is 60 km/h with one lane each way and 80 km/h with two or more lanes each way. If a speed limit sign is posted, follow it.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  3. 73.In Korea, on an ordinary road with two or more lanes each way outside residential, commercial and industrial areas, what is the statutory maximum speed (no speed limit sign)?

    1. 50 km/h
    2. 60 km/h
    3. 70 km/h
    4. 80 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ④ — 80 km/h

In Korea, the statutory maximum on ordinary roads with two or more lanes each way outside residential, commercial and industrial areas is 80 km/h. Under the same conditions with one lane each way, it is 60 km/h.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  4. 74.In Korea, what are the statutory maximum and minimum speeds on a motorway-only road (automobile-only road, not an expressway), with no signs?

    1. Max 90 km/h, min 30 km/h
    2. Max 100 km/h, min 50 km/h
    3. Max 80 km/h, min 40 km/h
    4. Max 110 km/h, min 30 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① — Max 90 km/h, min 30 km/h

In Korea, the statutory maximum on an automobile-only road is 90 km/h and the minimum is 30 km/h. Note that, unlike expressways, the minimum is 30 km/h.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  5. 75.In Korea, what are the statutory maximum and minimum speeds on an expressway with one lane each way (no signs)?

    1. Max 100 km/h, min 50 km/h
    2. Max 90 km/h, min 30 km/h
    3. Max 80 km/h, min 50 km/h
    4. Max 70 km/h, min 40 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — Max 80 km/h, min 50 km/h

In Korea, on an expressway with one lane each way the statutory maximum is 80 km/h and the minimum is 50 km/h. Expressways with two or more lanes each way have a higher maximum, but the same 50 km/h minimum.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  6. 76.In Korea, what is the statutory maximum speed for a passenger car on an expressway with two or more lanes each way (not a specially designated route, no signs)?

    1. 90 km/h
    2. 100 km/h
    3. 110 km/h
    4. 120 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — 100 km/h

In Korea, the statutory maximum for passenger cars on expressways with two or more lanes each way is 100 km/h, with a 50 km/h minimum. On specially designated and announced routes the limit can be set up to 120 km/h, so in practice check the posted speed limit signs.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  7. 77.In Korea, on an expressway with two or more lanes each way, what is the statutory maximum speed for a truck with a load capacity over 1.5 tonnes (not a designated route, no signs)?

    1. 80 km/h
    2. 90 km/h
    3. 100 km/h
    4. 110 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① — 80 km/h

In Korea, on expressways with two or more lanes each way, trucks with a load capacity over 1.5 tonnes, special vehicles, hazardous-material carriers and construction machinery are limited to 80 km/h. It is lower than for passenger cars (100 km/h) because heavier vehicles need longer to stop.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  8. 78.In Korea, when the road is wet from rain (no variable speed limit sign), what speed reduction does the law require?

    1. 10% below the maximum speed
    2. 20% below the maximum speed
    3. 50% below the maximum speed
    4. No reduction is required
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — 20% below the maximum speed

In Korea, when the road is wet from rain or snow is less than 20 mm deep, you must drive at 20% below the maximum speed. In more dangerous conditions, such as heavy rain limiting visibility to within 100 metres or an icy road, reduce by 50%.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  9. 79.Choose the TWO cases in which you must drive at 50% below the maximum speed (no variable speed limit sign).Choose 2

    1. The road is wet from rain
    2. The road surface is frozen
    3. Snow 20 mm or more deep has accumulated
    4. Snow less than 20 mm deep has accumulated
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② ③ — The road surface is frozen / Snow 20 mm or more deep has accumulated

In Korea, you must reduce the maximum speed by 50% when the road is frozen, when snow is 20 mm or more deep, or when heavy rain, snow or fog limits visibility to within 100 metres. A wet road or snow under 20 mm requires a 20% reduction.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  10. 80.Dense fog limits visibility to within 100 metres. On an expressway with a 100 km/h maximum, at what speed does the law require you to drive (no variable speed limit sign)?

    1. Up to 90 km/h
    2. Up to 80 km/h
    3. Up to 70 km/h
    4. Up to 50 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ④ — Up to 50 km/h

In Korea, when heavy rain, snow or fog limits visibility to within 100 metres, you must reduce the maximum speed by 50%, so on a 100 km/h road the limit becomes 50 km/h. In fog, also leave more distance to the car ahead than usual.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  11. 81.On a road with an 80 km/h maximum, the surface is wet from rain. What is the legal upper limit for your speed (no variable speed limit sign)?

    1. 72 km/h
    2. 70 km/h
    3. 64 km/h
    4. 40 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — 64 km/h

In Korea, a wet road requires a 20% reduction from the maximum speed, so the limit is 80 − 16 = 64 km/h. 40 km/h would be the result of a 50% reduction (ice, visibility within 100 metres, etc.).

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  12. 82.On an expressway you see a fixed speed limit sign (100 km/h) and a variable speed limit sign (80 km/h). Which maximum speed must you follow?

    1. 80 km/h on the variable speed limit sign
    2. 100 km/h on the fixed sign
    3. 90 km/h, the average of the two
    4. Either, at the driver's discretion
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — 80 km/h on the variable speed limit sign

In Korea, when a maximum speed is set by a variable speed limit sign you must follow it, and it takes precedence over a different limit on other traffic signs. Variable signs reflect current conditions such as weather, crashes or roadworks.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  13. 83.In Korea, what is the speed limit, in principle, on a road designated as a children's protection zone (school zone)?

    1. Up to 50 km/h
    2. Up to 40 km/h
    3. Up to 20 km/h
    4. Up to 30 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ④ — Up to 30 km/h

In Korea, speeds in children's protection zones can in principle be limited to 30 km/h, and most school zones operate at 30 km/h. Some sections or time periods have a different posted limit, so always check the signs.

  14. 84.Which correctly describes a vehicle's 'stopping distance'?

    1. The distance travelled from when the brakes start working until the car stops
    2. The sum of the reaction (thinking) distance and the braking distance
    3. The distance travelled from spotting a hazard until starting to press the brake pedal
    4. The distance between your car and the car ahead
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — The sum of the reaction (thinking) distance and the braking distance

Stopping distance is the reaction distance (travelled between noticing a hazard and pressing the brake) plus the braking distance (travelled from when the brakes act until the car stops). The first option describes braking distance; the third describes reaction distance.

  15. 85.What is the distance a car travels from the moment the driver notices a hazard until the brakes actually start working?

    1. Braking distance
    2. Stopping distance
    3. Reaction (thinking) distance
    4. Safe following distance
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Reaction (thinking) distance

The distance the car keeps travelling between noticing a hazard and the brakes taking effect is the reaction distance. It grows with higher speed and slower reactions. Adding the braking distance gives the stopping distance.

  16. 86.With the same car and road conditions, if you double your speed from 40 km/h to 80 km/h, what happens to the braking distance, roughly?

    1. It hardly changes
    2. It becomes about 1.5 times longer
    3. It becomes about twice as long
    4. It becomes about four times as long
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — It becomes about four times as long

Braking distance is roughly proportional to the square of speed, so doubling speed makes it about four times longer, while reaction distance, being proportional to speed, roughly doubles. This is why even a small increase in speed greatly lengthens the distance needed to stop.

  17. 87.When you drive while tired or drowsy, which part of the stopping distance becomes longer in particular?

    1. The reaction (thinking) distance
    2. Only the braking distance
    3. The distance due to tyre wear
    4. There is no effect
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — The reaction (thinking) distance

Fatigue, drowsiness and alcohol lengthen the time it takes to notice a hazard and press the brake, which increases the reaction distance. Braking distance depends mainly on speed, the road surface and the condition of the tyres and brakes.

  18. 88.Hydroplaning occurs when a film of water forms between the tyres and the road at speed in the rain, making steering and braking ineffective. Which statement is correct?

    1. It is more likely at lower speeds
    2. It is more likely with deeper tyre treads
    3. It is more likely at higher speeds and with worn tyres, so slow down in the rain
    4. Lowering tyre pressure prevents it
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — It is more likely at higher speeds and with worn tyres, so slow down in the rain

Hydroplaning is more likely at higher speeds, with shallower (more worn) treads and with under-inflated tyres. Prevent it by slowing down in the rain and keeping tyres in good condition at the correct pressure. If it happens, avoid sudden braking or steering.

  19. 89.What is the best way to drive down a long, steep downhill slope?

    1. Put the gear in neutral and keep pressing the foot brake
    2. Use a low gear for engine braking, with the foot brake as a supplement
    3. Turn off the engine and coast down
    4. Speed up to get down quickly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Use a low gear for engine braking, with the foot brake as a supplement

Relying only on the foot brake on a long descent can overheat the brakes, causing brake fade or vapour lock (bubbles in the brake fluid). Use a low gear for engine braking and apply the foot brake intermittently as a supplement. Coasting in neutral or with the engine off is very dangerous.

  20. 90.How can you reduce the 'standing wave' phenomenon, in which a tyre deforms in ripples at high speed and may overheat and fail?

    1. Keep the tyres at the correct pressure and avoid speeding
    2. Lower the tyre pressure below normal
    3. Drive even faster to cool the tyres
    4. Use tyres without tread
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Keep the tyres at the correct pressure and avoid speeding

Standing waves occur at high speed, especially when tyres are under-inflated. Before long expressway trips, set the correct tyre pressure and avoid speeding.

  21. 91.What is the most appropriate way to drive safely through a bend?

    1. Brake hard inside the bend to slow down
    2. Speed up after entering the bend
    3. Hug the centre line and take a wide line
    4. Slow down sufficiently before entering, and keep a steady speed through the bend
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Slow down sufficiently before entering, and keep a steady speed through the bend

In a bend, centrifugal force pushes the car outward, so reduce speed on the straight before entering. Hard braking in the bend can cause a skid, and hugging the centre line risks hitting oncoming traffic.

  22. 92.Under Korea's Road Traffic Act, what is the standard for the 'safe distance' a driver must keep from the vehicle ahead?

    1. Always at least 10 metres
    2. The distance needed to avoid a collision if the vehicle ahead suddenly stops
    3. Far enough that you cannot read its number plate
    4. Two car lengths regardless of speed
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — The distance needed to avoid a collision if the vehicle ahead suddenly stops

In Korea, the law does not set a number; it requires enough distance to avoid a collision if the vehicle ahead suddenly stops. The faster you go or the more slippery the road, the more distance you need.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  23. 93.On a road with an 80 km/h limit, you want to overtake a slow truck. Which statement about speed is correct?

    1. While overtaking you may exceed the limit by up to 20 km/h
    2. Speed limits do not apply while overtaking
    3. You must not exceed the maximum speed even while overtaking
    4. You must drive twice as fast as the vehicle ahead
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — You must not exceed the maximum speed even while overtaking

In Korea, there is no exception that lifts the speed limit while overtaking. If you cannot complete the manoeuvre within the limit, do not overtake.

  24. 94.With no congestion and nothing wrong with your car, you keep driving at 40 km/h on an expressway with two lanes each way. Which statement is correct?

    1. It may be a violation, as it is below the expressway minimum speed (50 km/h)
    2. It is desirable, since slower is always safer
    3. It is fine if you are in the first lane
    4. It is fine as long as the hazard lights are on
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — It may be a violation, as it is below the expressway minimum speed (50 km/h)

In Korea, the minimum speed on expressways with two or more lanes each way is 50 km/h. Driving below it without an unavoidable reason such as congestion or bad weather can be a violation, and the large speed difference raises the risk of being rear-ended.

Legal basis: Enforcement Rule of the Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  25. 95.You are driving through a school zone (30 km/h limit). There are no other cars ahead and no children in sight. How should you drive?

    1. Drive at ordinary road speeds since no children are around
    2. Ignore the limit outside school commuting hours
    3. Going slightly over 30 km/h is fine if you avoid enforcement
    4. Stay within 30 km/h and be ready for a child suddenly darting out
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Stay within 30 km/h and be ready for a child suddenly darting out

In Korea, the school-zone limit applies even when no children or other cars are visible. Children are small and often appear suddenly from between parked cars, so keep your speed down and watch your surroundings.

Safe driving 25

  1. 96.At a crosswalk without traffic lights, a pedestrian is standing, about to cross. What should the driver do?

    1. Drive on, since the pedestrian has not started crossing
    2. Sound the horn to signal that you are passing
    3. Stop before the crosswalk
    4. Speed up to pass before the pedestrian starts crossing
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Stop before the crosswalk

In Korea, drivers must stop before a crosswalk (before the stop line if there is one) not only when pedestrians are crossing but also when they are about to cross. If a pedestrian shows the intention to cross, stop first and let them go.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 27

  2. 97.You are approaching a crosswalk without traffic lights inside a school zone. No pedestrians are visible. What should you do?

    1. Stop before the crosswalk whether or not pedestrians are present
    2. Pass slowly since no one is there
    3. Keep 30 km/h and drive through
    4. Sound the horn and pass
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Stop before the crosswalk whether or not pedestrians are present

In Korea, at a crosswalk without traffic lights inside a children's protection zone, drivers must stop before it whether or not anyone is crossing. Small children can be hidden behind parked cars or street furniture.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 27

  3. 98.On a road with two lanes each way, a children's school bus has stopped in the second lane with its flashing lights on and is letting children off. You are in the first lane. What should you do?

    1. Keep your speed, since you are in the first lane
    2. Stop before reaching the bus, check for safety, then pass slowly
    3. Pass slowly while sounding the horn
    4. Overtake the bus quickly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Stop before reaching the bus, check for safety, then pass slowly

In Korea, when a children's school bus has stopped with lights flashing to show children are getting on or off, vehicles in the bus's lane and the lane right next to it must stop before reaching it, check for safety, then pass slowly. Children may suddenly run out in front of or behind the bus.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 51

  4. 99.On a road with one lane each way and a centre line, a children's school bus in the opposite lane has stopped with its flashing lights on and is picking up children. You are travelling in the other direction. What should you do?

    1. Drive on, since it is in the opposite direction
    2. Move toward the centre line and pass quickly
    3. Sound the horn to warn the children
    4. Stop before reaching the bus, check for safety, then pass slowly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Stop before reaching the bus, check for safety, then pass slowly

In Korea, on roads without a centre line and on roads with one lane each way, drivers coming from the opposite direction must also stop before reaching a stopped school bus, check for safety and then pass slowly, because children may cross the road toward your side.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 51

  5. 100.A children's school bus displaying that it is carrying children is driving slowly ahead of you. What should you do?

    1. Overtake in the left lane if it is safe
    2. Overtake if the centre line is dashed
    3. Do not overtake; follow behind it
    4. Sound the horn to ask it to move over
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Do not overtake; follow behind it

In Korea, no driver may overtake a children's school bus that is on the road displaying that it is carrying children or infants. It may stop suddenly to let children off, so follow at a sufficient distance.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 51

  6. 101.A visually impaired person with a white cane is crossing a road where there is no crosswalk. What should the driver do?

    1. Stop and let them cross safely
    2. Sound the horn, since it is not a crosswalk
    3. Drive quickly around behind them
    4. Swerve into the next lane without slowing down
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Stop and let them cross safely

In Korea, when a person who cannot see is crossing the road with a white cane or a guide dog, drivers must stop, whether or not there is a crosswalk. A horn can disorient the person.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 49

  7. 102.After rain, pedestrians are walking on the sidewalk next to a road with standing water. How should you drive?

    1. Driving fast splashes less water
    2. Sound the horn so pedestrians move away
    3. Drive through the middle of the puddle
    4. Slow down so that water does not splash the pedestrians
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Slow down so that water does not splash the pedestrians

In Korea, when driving through standing water, drivers must not splash others and cause them harm. The faster you go, the farther water sprays, so slow down early and avoid the puddle if you can.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 49

  8. 103.In Korea, when may a driver use a mobile phone held in the hand?

    1. When driving slowly at 20 km/h or less
    2. When the vehicle is stationary
    3. When checking a short text message
    4. When driving on a quiet road
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — When the vehicle is stationary

In Korea, using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, with exceptions such as when the vehicle is stationary, when driving an emergency vehicle, in urgent cases like reporting a crime or disaster, and when using a hands-free device. Driving slowly or being on a quiet road does not make it allowed.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 49

  9. 104.You are about to drive with your 4-year-old child in your car. Which method meets the law?

    1. Install a child restraint (car seat), seat the child in it and fasten the seat belt
    2. An adult holds the child and both wear one belt
    3. For short trips, seat the child in the back without a belt
    4. Seat the child in the front passenger seat with just the adult belt
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Install a child restraint (car seat), seat the child in it and fasten the seat belt

In Korea, when carrying infants and young children (under 6), the driver must have them wear the seat belt with a child restraint installed. A child held in an adult's arms cannot be held in a crash, and an adult belt alone does not fit a small child and can cause injury.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 50

  10. 105.Which statement about the duty to wear seat belts is correct?

    1. All seats must wear them only on expressways
    2. Only the driver and front passenger need to
    3. Occupants of every seat must wear them on all roads, including ordinary roads
    4. Rear-seat passengers need not wear them on city roads
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Occupants of every seat must wear them on all roads, including ordinary roads

In Korea, since September 2018 the driver and passengers in every seat must wear seat belts on all roads, including ordinary roads, and the driver must make passengers wear them too. An unbelted rear passenger can be thrown forward in a crash, seriously injuring themselves and those in front.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 50

  11. 106.The driver is getting out briefly to go into a convenience store. What is the correct action?

    1. Leave the engine running, since you'll be right back
    2. Turn off the engine and apply the brakes firmly so the car cannot move
    3. Put it in neutral and get out
    4. Just lock the doors
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Turn off the engine and apply the brakes firmly so the car cannot move

In Korea, when leaving the driver's seat, the driver must turn off the engine and firmly apply the brakes to keep the vehicle safely stationary, and take steps so no one else can drive it. Leaving the engine running risks the car moving or being stolen.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 49

  12. 107.After stopping at the roadside, you want to open the driver's door and get out. What is the safest way?

    1. Open the door quickly and get out fast
    2. Open it if no car behind sounds its horn
    3. Open the door wide to show traffic behind that you are getting out
    4. Check the side mirror and look back directly, then open when no car, bicycle or motorcycle is coming
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Check the side mirror and look back directly, then open when no car, bicycle or motorcycle is coming

In Korea, drivers must not open a door or get out without checking it is safe, and must make sure passengers do not create a hazard either. Bicycles and motorcycles approaching from behind may not show clearly in mirrors, so turn your head to check and open the door slowly.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 49

  13. 108.When a large truck turns right at an intersection, which caution is correct?

    1. The rear wheels track inside the front wheels (off-tracking), so pedestrians and motorcycles on the truck's right are in danger
    2. The rear wheels track outside the front wheels, so only the left side matters
    3. Large vehicles have no blind spots
    4. When turning right, it only matters that the front wheels do not mount the sidewalk
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — The rear wheels track inside the front wheels (off-tracking), so pedestrians and motorcycles on the truck's right are in danger

When a vehicle turns, its rear wheels follow a tighter path than the front wheels, and this off-tracking is greater for long vehicles. So when a large vehicle turns right, pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists on its right can be caught by the rear wheels. Keep well clear of large vehicles as they turn.

  14. 109.At night, you are dazzled by the headlights of an oncoming car. What should you do?

    1. Look straight into the headlights
    2. Switch on your high beams in return
    3. Shift your gaze slightly toward the right edge of the road
    4. Close your eyes briefly while driving
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Shift your gaze slightly toward the right edge of the road

Looking straight at oncoming headlights can blind you for a moment. Shift your gaze slightly to the right edge of the road to keep your lane, and slow down. Flashing your high beams back dazzles the other driver too and makes things more dangerous.

  15. 110.At night, where the light from your headlights and those of an oncoming car overlap, a pedestrian between them can momentarily disappear from view. What is this phenomenon called?

    1. Hydroplaning
    2. The evaporation (vanishing) phenomenon
    3. Vapour lock
    4. Standing waves
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — The evaporation (vanishing) phenomenon

The 'evaporation phenomenon' is when a pedestrian or object seems to vanish in the overlapping glare of your headlights and an oncoming car's. When cars are coming at night, slow down and watch especially for pedestrians near the middle of the road.

  16. 111.Driving at night with high beams on, you see a car approaching from the opposite direction. What is the correct use of lights?

    1. Keep the high beams on
    2. Flash the high beams several times
    3. Add the fog lights to make it even brighter
    4. Reduce the headlight intensity (switch to low beams)
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Reduce the headlight intensity (switch to low beams)

In Korea, when vehicles meet at night, drivers must avoid dazzling each other, for example by dimming the headlights or pointing them downward. The same applies when following closely behind another vehicle. Keeping or flashing high beams dazzles the other driver and is dangerous.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 37

  17. 112.What is the correct way to drive on a road in dense fog?

    1. Use low beams and fog lights, slow down and increase the distance to the car ahead
    2. Use high beams to light up farther ahead
    3. Follow closely, watching only the tail lights ahead
    4. Speed up to get out of the fog quickly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Use low beams and fog lights, slow down and increase the distance to the car ahead

In fog, high beams reflect off the water droplets and actually reduce visibility. Turn on low beams and fog lights so others can see you, slow down, and leave more distance to the car ahead than usual.

  18. 113.Choose the TWO places where thin, nearly invisible ice (black ice) easily forms in winter even when the road looks clear.Choose 2

    1. On bridges
    2. A sunny, flat road
    3. Inside an underground car park
    4. A shaded road around a mountain bend
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① ④ — On bridges / A shaded road around a mountain bend

On bridges, cold air flows beneath the deck, so the surface cools quickly, and shaded areas get no sun to melt ice. Tunnel entrances and exits are also prone to black ice, so slow down in advance there and avoid sudden braking or steering.

  19. 114.You want to pass a bicycle travelling in the same direction. What is the correct way?

    1. Give a long blast of the horn so it moves onto the shoulder
    2. Leave enough distance to avoid a collision and slow down if necessary as you pass
    3. Pass quickly right alongside it
    4. Tailgate it to pressure the rider
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Leave enough distance to avoid a collision and slow down if necessary as you pass

In Korea, drivers must pay attention to cyclists going in the same direction and, when passing, keep the distance needed to avoid a collision. Bicycles may wobble suddenly because of the road surface or wind. If there is not enough room, wait before passing.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 19

  20. 115.In a narrow alley with no separate sidewalk and no lanes, a pedestrian is walking ahead of you. What should you do?

    1. Sound the horn so the pedestrian moves aside
    2. Pass beside the pedestrian without slowing
    3. Pass slowly at a safe distance, and stop if you would obstruct them
    4. Follow closely behind the pedestrian
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Pass slowly at a safe distance, and stop if you would obstruct them

In Korea, on narrow roads without lanes or roads with no separate sidewalk, drivers passing pedestrians must keep a safe distance and drive slowly, and stop if they might obstruct the pedestrian. In alleys, drive as if pedestrians have priority.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 27

  21. 116.On a residential street, you see several children playing on the road with no adult present. What should you do?

    1. Stop and make sure the children are safe
    2. Sound the horn to make them move
    3. Drive slowly between the children
    4. Keep your speed and swerve into the opposite lane
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Stop and make sure the children are safe

In Korea, when a driver sees children crossing without a guardian, or sitting, standing or playing on the road, or otherwise at risk of a traffic accident, the driver must stop. Children move unpredictably, so drive very slowly when you do pass.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 49

  22. 117.After driving on the expressway for a long time, you start to feel drowsy. What is the safest response?

    1. Open the window, turn the music up and keep going
    2. Speed up to reach your destination sooner
    3. Stop briefly on the shoulder and sleep
    4. Pull into the nearest rest area or drowsiness shelter and rest
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Pull into the nearest rest area or drowsiness shelter and rest

Opening a window or playing music helps only briefly and does not solve drowsiness, so rest at a rest area or a roadside drowsiness shelter. In Korea, you may not stop on the expressway shoulder except in unavoidable cases such as a breakdown, and the risk of being rear-ended there is very high.

  23. 118.Driving on a residential street, you see a ball roll out from between parked cars. What is the most appropriate response?

    1. Just avoid the ball and drive on
    2. Slow down at once and be ready to stop, since a child may run out after the ball
    3. Sound the horn and pass
    4. It's fine to drive over the ball
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Slow down at once and be ready to stop, since a child may run out after the ball

A ball rolling into the road is often followed by a child chasing it. Rather than just steering around the ball, slow down immediately and be ready to stop; anticipating hazards like this is the essence of defensive driving.

  24. 119.When entering a tunnel in the daytime, which statement about lights is correct?

    1. It's daytime, so lights are not needed
    2. Turning on the hazard lights is enough
    3. You must turn on lights such as headlights, side lights and tail lights
    4. You must use high beams
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — You must turn on lights such as headlights, side lights and tail lights

In Korea, when driving in a tunnel you must turn on the required lights, such as headlights, side lights and tail lights, even in daytime. It is dark inside, making you hard to see, and your eyes need time to adjust when entering from bright daylight, so also slow down before entering.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act, Article 37

  25. 120.Which driving habit is closest to defensive driving?

    1. Watching not just the car ahead but traffic beyond it, and keeping a sufficient distance
    2. Closing the gap to the car ahead so no one can cut in
    3. Proceeding on the belief that others will yield when you have priority
    4. Sounding the horn first when you sense danger and carrying on
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Watching not just the car ahead but traffic beyond it, and keeping a sufficient distance

Defensive driving means anticipating even other drivers' and pedestrians' mistakes and preparing in advance. Watching beyond the car ahead and keeping ample distance gives you time to react to sudden situations. Relying only on your right of way or closing gaps increases the risk of a crash.

Penalties & points 30

  1. 121.In Korea, what is the minimum blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at which a driver's license is suspended for drunk driving?

    1. 0.01% or higher
    2. 0.03% or higher
    3. 0.05% or higher
    4. 0.08% or higher
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — 0.03% or higher

A BAC of 0.03% or higher counts as drunk driving and leads to license suspension. 0.05% was the old threshold before 2019, and 0.08% or higher is the revocation threshold.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 44

  2. 122.In Korea, a driver is stopped at a sobriety checkpoint for the first time, with no accident, and has a BAC of 0.09%. What administrative action is taken against the license?

    1. Only a warning, no action
    2. Only penalty points; the license is kept
    3. The license is revoked
    4. The license is suspended
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — The license is revoked

A BAC of 0.08% or higher is the revocation threshold regardless of whether there was an accident or a prior offense. Suspension applies when the BAC is 0.03% or more but below 0.08%.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 44

  3. 123.In Korea, a police officer has reasonable grounds to believe a driver has been drinking and requests a breath test, but the driver refuses without a valid reason. Which statement is correct?

    1. Without a test result, the driver cannot be punished
    2. Paying a minor fine settles the matter
    3. The refusal itself is a criminal offense and grounds for license revocation
    4. The driver may test himself the next day and submit the result
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — The refusal itself is a criminal offense and grounds for license revocation

Drivers must comply with a police alcohol test, and refusing without a valid reason is itself punishable and leads to license revocation. The idea that avoiding the test helps the driver is wrong.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 44

  4. 124.In Korea, a driver disputes the alcohol reading from a breath analyzer. Which statement is correct?

    1. With the driver's consent, alcohol can be measured again by a method such as a blood test
    2. Disputing it automatically voids the result
    3. Refusing a second test erases the first result
    4. Disputes are not allowed and there is no other method
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — With the driver's consent, alcohol can be measured again by a method such as a blood test

A driver who disputes a breath test result can, with consent, be tested again by methods such as a blood sample. Disputing the result does not automatically void it.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 44

  5. 125.In Korea, a driver who drank late into the night is stopped on the way to work the next morning and shows a BAC of 0.04%. Which is correct?

    1. It is not drunk driving because the driver slept
    2. The standard is relaxed in the morning
    3. It is below 0.05%, so it is not punishable
    4. It counts as drunk driving and leads to license suspension
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — It counts as drunk driving and leads to license suspension

Drunk driving is judged by the BAC at the time of driving, not by when the drinking happened. 0.04% is at or above 0.03%, so even a hangover reading counts as drunk driving and leads to suspension.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 44

  6. 126.In Korea, at what level of accumulated penalty points does a license suspension take effect?

    1. 10 points
    2. 20 points
    3. 40 points
    4. 60 points
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — 40 points

A license suspension is carried out once the penalty points reach 40 or more. Below 40, the points are only recorded and the license is not suspended right away.

  7. 127.In Korea, if a driver's penalty points reach 50 and the license is suspended, how long is the suspension in principle?

    1. 25 days
    2. 40 days
    3. 50 days
    4. 100 days
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — 50 days

The suspension period is calculated at one day per penalty point. So 50 points means a 50-day suspension in principle; reductions for completing education are applied separately.

  8. 128.In Korea, which is the correct one-year threshold for license revocation due to accumulated penalty points?

    1. 100 points or more in 1 year
    2. 121 points or more in 1 year
    3. 150 points or more in 1 year
    4. 201 points or more in 1 year
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — 121 points or more in 1 year

A license is revoked when accumulated points reach 121 or more within one year. 201 points is the two-year threshold, and 271 points is the three-year threshold.

  9. 129.In Korea, choose the 2 correct thresholds for license revocation due to accumulated penalty points.Choose 2

    1. 201 points or more in 2 years
    2. 150 points or more in 2 years
    3. 200 points or more in 3 years
    4. 271 points or more in 3 years
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① ④ — 201 points or more in 2 years / 271 points or more in 3 years

The revocation thresholds are 121 points in 1 year, 201 points in 2 years and 271 points in 3 years. 150 or 200 points do not match any period's threshold.

  10. 130.In Korea, when are penalty points removed for a driver whose points are below 40?

    1. Automatically the month after they were given
    2. When one year passes from the last violation without any violation or accident
    3. When the driver changes cars
    4. Immediately upon license renewal
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — When one year passes from the last violation without any violation or accident

If the points are below 40, they expire once one year has passed since the last violation with no further violations or accidents. Changing cars or renewing the license has nothing to do with points.

  11. 131.In Korea, under the 'Good Driving Mileage' program, how many credit points does a driver earn by keeping a pledge of no violations and no accidents for one year?

    1. 5 points
    2. 10 points
    3. 20 points
    4. 40 points
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — 10 points

The program credits 10 points for each year a driver keeps the pledge of no violations and no accidents, and these can be deducted from penalty points when a suspension is later imposed. Enrollment follows the National Police Agency's guidance.

  12. 132.In Korea, a speed camera records a speeding car, and the vehicle owner receives an administrative fine. Which statement is correct?

    1. Penalty points are always added with the fine
    2. Paying the fine suspends the driver's license
    3. The fine is charged to a passenger, not the driver
    4. When handled as an owner's administrative fine, no penalty points are given
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — When handled as an owner's administrative fine, no penalty points are given

Because an unmanned camera cannot identify the driver, the owner is charged an administrative fine with no penalty points. If the actual driver is identified and handled with a traffic-violation fine instead, points are added.

  13. 133.In Korea, what happens if a driver who received a traffic-violation fine notice does not pay within the deadline?

    1. A surcharge is added, and if still unpaid the case goes to summary trial
    2. The fine is waived after the deadline
    3. The license is automatically revoked
    4. It can be paid together with the next violation
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — A surcharge is added, and if still unpaid the case goes to summary trial

If the fine is not paid in time, a surcharge is added, and if it remains unpaid the case moves to a summary trial. It is never waived just because time passes.

  14. 134.In Korea, a person whose license is currently suspended drives a car himself because 'it is only a short distance'. What is this?

    1. Short trips are allowed during a suspension
    2. Only extra penalty points are added
    3. It counts as driving without a license
    4. It is fine if a passenger is present
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — It counts as driving without a license

During a suspension the person has no right to drive, so driving then is driving without a license. Distance or having a passenger makes no difference.

  15. 135.In Korea, which is correct about a driver who causes an injury accident and leaves the scene without helping the injured?

    1. It is fine if insurance handles it later
    2. It is subject to aggravated punishment and license revocation
    3. It is not punished if the injury is minor
    4. Only 10 penalty points are given
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — It is subject to aggravated punishment and license revocation

After an accident with casualties, the driver must stop, help and report; leaving is a hit-and-run that brings aggravated punishment and license revocation. Insurance or a minor injury does not excuse it.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 54

  16. 136.In Korea, a driver with comprehensive insurance injures someone. In which case can the driver face criminal charges even if the victim does not want punishment?

    1. Rear-ending the car ahead after following too closely, causing a minor injury
    2. Running a red light and injuring a pedestrian
    3. Touching a car in the next lane while changing lanes, causing a minor injury
    4. Brushing someone while moving slowly in a narrow alley, causing a minor injury
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Running a red light and injuring a pedestrian

Running a signal is one of the 12 serious-negligence items in the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents, so criminal charges are possible even with comprehensive insurance. The other cases are not on that list and can usually be settled through insurance and agreement.

  17. 137.In Korea, choose the 2 items that are serious negligence under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents, punishable even with comprehensive insurance.Choose 2

    1. Crossing the center line and hitting an oncoming car
    2. Changing lanes after signaling late
    3. Causing an accident by failing to protect a pedestrian in a crosswalk
    4. Touching a pillar while leaving a parking lot
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① ③ — Crossing the center line and hitting an oncoming car / Causing an accident by failing to protect a pedestrian in a crosswalk

Crossing the center line and violating the duty to protect pedestrians in a crosswalk are among the 12 serious-negligence items. Signaling late or touching a parking-lot pillar are not on the list.

  18. 138.In Korea, what level of speeding counts as serious negligence under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents?

    1. More than 5 km/h over the limit
    2. More than 10 km/h over the limit
    3. More than 20 km/h over the limit
    4. More than 60 km/h over the limit
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — More than 20 km/h over the limit

Causing an accident while exceeding the limit by more than 20 km/h is serious negligence, so criminal charges are possible regardless of insurance. Smaller excesses are still speeding violations but do not fall under this exception.

  19. 139.In Korea, when is it allowed to hold a mobile phone and talk while driving?

    1. When moving slowly at 20 km/h or less
    2. On a straight section of expressway
    3. For a short call using only one hand
    4. When the vehicle is completely stopped
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — When the vehicle is completely stopped

Using a phone while driving is prohibited, with exceptions such as when the vehicle is stopped, when driving an emergency vehicle, or when reporting an accident. Driving slowly or keeping the call short is not an exception.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 49

  20. 140.In Korea, what may be displayed on a screen visible to the driver while the car is moving?

    1. Navigation guidance to the destination
    2. A video streaming broadcast
    3. A TV drama
    4. A movie trailer
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Navigation guidance to the destination

Watching broadcasts or videos on a display while driving is prohibited, but navigation and traffic-information images are an exception. Broadcasts and movies draw the driver's eyes away from the road.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 49

  21. 141.In Korea, what is the speed limit in a children's protection zone (school zone) in principle?

    1. 20 km/h
    2. 30 km/h
    3. 40 km/h
    4. 50 km/h
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — 30 km/h

In Korea, school zones are limited to 30 km/h in principle. Some sections set an even lower limit by sign, so follow the signs on site.

  22. 142.In Korea, during what hours are penalty points doubled for violations such as speeding or running a signal in a school zone?

    1. All 24 hours
    2. From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.
    3. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    4. Only on school-day afternoons
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Violations such as speeding or running a signal in a school zone between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. bring double points and heavier fines than on ordinary roads. The speed limit itself still applies at other times.

  23. 143.In Korea, which is correct about injuring a child in a school zone by failing to drive safely?

    1. The driver can face aggravated punishment under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes
    2. There is no criminal punishment if the driver has comprehensive insurance
    3. A minor injury is not punishable
    4. Outside school dismissal hours it is the same as any accident
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — The driver can face aggravated punishment under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes

Injuring or killing a child in a school zone through a breach of the duty to drive safely can bring aggravated punishment under that Act (often called the Minsik Act). Comprehensive insurance does not exempt the driver.

  24. 144.In Korea, if a license is revoked for a single drunk-driving offense with no accident, how long is the disqualification period before the person can get a license again?

    1. 6 months
    2. 1 year
    3. 3 years
    4. 5 years
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — 1 year

After a revocation for one drunk-driving offense without an accident, the person generally cannot obtain a license for 1 year from the revocation date. The period is longer for repeat offenses or offenses involving an accident.

  25. 145.In Korea, which counts as 'joint dangerous driving' under the Road Traffic Act?

    1. One driver changing lanes often in a traffic jam
    2. Two family cars traveling separately to the same place
    3. Following the car ahead at a safe distance
    4. Two or more people driving two or more vehicles in a line and endangering others
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Two or more people driving two or more vehicles in a line and endangering others

Joint dangerous driving is when two or more people together drive two or more vehicles in a row, front-to-back or side-by-side, without good reason, endangering others or causing traffic danger. Simply going to the same place together does not count.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 46

  26. 146.In Korea, which of the following can count as 'reckless driving'?

    1. Changing lanes once after signaling
    2. Speeding and braking suddenly in a row to threaten another car
    3. Stopping on the shoulder because of a breakdown
    4. Continuing to drive slowly because of congestion
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Speeding and braking suddenly in a row to threaten another car

Reckless driving means doing two or more listed acts in a row, such as running signals, speeding, sudden braking or improper overtaking, or repeating one of them, so as to threaten others. Normal lane changes, breakdown stops and slow driving in traffic do not count.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 46-3

  27. 147.In Korea, which is correct about seat belts when driving a passenger car on an ordinary road?

    1. Only the driver must wear one
    2. Only the front seats must wear them
    3. Occupants of all seats must wear them on every road
    4. Rear-seat belts are required only on expressways
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Occupants of all seats must wear them on every road

Since 2018, seat belts have been mandatory in all seats on every road, not just expressways and motorways. The driver must also make sure passengers buckle up.

  28. 148.In Korea, while leaving a parking lot you scratch a parked car and the owner is nowhere to be seen. What should you do?

    1. Leave your contact details or otherwise provide your personal information to the owner
    2. Leave if the scratch is small
    3. Wait on the spot no matter how long until the owner returns
    4. Contact the police the next day
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Leave your contact details or otherwise provide your personal information to the owner

Even when only a parked car is damaged, the driver must give the owner their name, contact details and similar information, and simply leaving is punishable. Leaving contact details or notifying the police right away is enough; waiting indefinitely is not required.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 54

  29. 149.In Korea, you had one glass of beer at a work dinner about 30 minutes ago. Home is a 10-minute drive. What is the best course of action?

    1. Drive slowly since it was only one glass
    2. Open the windows to sober up, then drive
    3. Drink coffee and drive right away
    4. Do not drive; use a designated-driver service or public transport
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Do not drive; use a designated-driver service or public transport

BAC from the same amount of alcohol varies by person and situation, and even a small amount slows judgment and reactions. If you have been drinking, the rule is not to drive at all; coffee or fresh air does not remove alcohol faster.

  30. 150.In Korea, what must a person whose license has been revoked do to drive again?

    1. The license is automatically restored 3 months after revocation
    2. Paying a fine restores the license immediately
    3. After the disqualification period ends, pass the license test again and obtain a new license
    4. Passing an aptitude test alone allows driving right away
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — After the disqualification period ends, pass the license test again and obtain a new license

Revocation cancels the license itself, so after the disqualification period the person must complete any required education and pass the test again to get a new license. This differs from a suspension, after which driving resumes once the period ends.

  1. 151.When can tire pressure be checked most accurately?

    1. Before driving, while the tires are cold
    2. Right after driving on an expressway for an hour
    3. After parking in strong midday sun for a long time
    4. Right after braking hard several times
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Before driving, while the tires are cold

Tires warm up from driving or sunlight, which makes the pressure read higher. Checking them cold before driving gives a reading you can compare accurately with the recommended value.

  2. 152.What is the best way to find the correct tire pressure for your car?

    1. Inflate to the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall
    2. Use the same value as another car
    3. Check the label inside the driver's door or the owner's manual
    4. If the tire does not look flat, it is enough
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Check the label inside the driver's door or the owner's manual

The right pressure differs by model, and the manufacturer lists it on a label inside the driver's door or in the owner's manual. The number on the sidewall is the maximum the tire can take, not the recommended value.

  3. 153.What phenomenon occurs when an under-inflated tire is driven at high speed, deforming into a wave shape that can overheat and burst?

    1. Vapor lock
    2. Standing wave
    3. Brake fade
    4. Hydroplaning
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — Standing wave

A standing wave forms when an under-inflated tire is pressed again before its contact patch recovers at high speed, building heat that can lead to a blowout. Vapor lock and fade are brake problems, and hydroplaning happens on wet roads.

  4. 154.What is likely to happen when tires are inflated well above the recommended pressure?

    1. Only the outer edges wear quickly
    2. The contact area grows and braking improves
    3. The ride becomes softer
    4. The contact area shrinks, grip drops and the center wears quickly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — The contact area shrinks, grip drops and the center wears quickly

Over-inflated tires bulge so that only the center touches the road, reducing grip and wearing the middle faster. Fast wear on both edges is a sign of under-inflation.

  5. 155.In Korea, to what depth can a car tire's tread wear before it must be replaced?

    1. 0.5 mm
    2. 1.6 mm
    3. 3.0 mm
    4. 5.0 mm
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — 1.6 mm

A tread depth of 1.6 mm is the wear limit, and when the wear indicator in the grooves becomes level with the surface, it is time to replace the tire. For safety on wet roads, it is better to replace tires before they reach the limit.

  6. 156.Choose the 2 correct ways to reduce hydroplaning on wet roads.Choose 2

    1. Drive at a reduced speed
    2. Lower tire pressure below the recommended value
    3. Replace badly worn tires
    4. Brake hard in puddles
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① ③ — Drive at a reduced speed / Replace badly worn tires

Hydroplaning is more likely at higher speeds and with worn tread, so slowing down and maintaining tires are the key. Lowering pressure actually worsens water drainage, and hard braking makes skidding worse.

  7. 157.A warning light shaped like a horseshoe with an exclamation mark inside (tire pressure warning) comes on. What should you do?

    1. Top up the engine oil
    2. Ignore it and drive fast to your destination
    3. Stop in a safe place and check the tires and their pressure
    4. Disconnect the battery terminals
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Stop in a safe place and check the tires and their pressure

This light means the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) has detected low pressure. Check the tires for damage and their pressure in a safe place, then inflate them or have them serviced.

  8. 158.While driving, the engine oil pressure warning light (shaped like an oil can) comes on. What is the most appropriate action?

    1. Stop immediately in a safe place, turn off the engine and check the oil
    2. Speed up to reach a repair shop quickly
    3. Turning off the air conditioner will fix it
    4. Wait until the next scheduled service
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Stop immediately in a safe place, turn off the engine and check the oil

Low oil pressure means the engine is not being lubricated, which can cause serious damage in a short time. Pull over safely, turn off the engine, check the oil level, and call a tow if needed.

  9. 159.The engine overheats: the coolant temperature gauge climbs high and steam comes from under the hood. What should you NOT do?

    1. Stop the car in a safe place
    2. Turn on the hazard lights
    3. Wait until the engine cools down
    4. Open the coolant (radiator) cap while it is hot
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Open the coolant (radiator) cap while it is hot

Hot coolant is under high pressure and can spray out when the cap is opened, causing burns. Stop safely, let it cool fully, then check it or call for service.

  10. 160.While driving, a battery-shaped warning light comes on. What does it mainly indicate?

    1. Engine oil is low
    2. A problem in the charging system, such as the alternator
    3. Tire pressure is low
    4. The fuel is almost empty
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — A problem in the charging system, such as the alternator

The battery light means the battery is not being charged properly while driving, suggesting a fault in the charging system such as the alternator or drive belt. If you keep driving, the car may run out of power and stop, so have it checked.

  11. 161.The parking brake is fully released, but the brake warning light stays on. What should you suspect first?

    1. Low washer fluid
    2. Low air-conditioner refrigerant
    3. Low brake fluid or another brake system fault
    4. A clogged fuel filter
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Low brake fluid or another brake system fault

If the brake light stays on with the parking brake released, the brake fluid may be low or there may be a fault in the brake system. Because this directly affects stopping power, postpone driving and have it inspected right away.

  12. 162.What is the main reason brake fluid should be replaced regularly?

    1. It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point
    2. Darker fluid reduces engine power
    3. It contains an additive that improves fuel economy
    4. It prevents tire wear
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, so old fluid has a lower boiling point and is more prone to vapor lock, where bubbles form on long descents and the brakes weaken. That is why it is replaced at set intervals.

  13. 163.What is the best way to drive down a long, steep downhill road?

    1. Shift to neutral and coast down
    2. Keep pressing the foot brake all the way down
    3. Turn off the engine and roll down
    4. Use engine braking in a low gear, with the foot brake as a supplement
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Use engine braking in a low gear, with the foot brake as a supplement

Relying only on the foot brake can overheat the brakes and cause fade or vapor lock. Use engine braking in a low gear as the main method with the foot brake as backup; coasting in neutral or with the engine off is very dangerous.

  14. 164.What is it called when the brakes are used hard and often, the friction material overheats, and braking power drops even when the pedal is pressed?

    1. Standing wave
    2. Brake fade
    3. Hydroplaning
    4. Road holding
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — Brake fade

Fade is the loss of friction when the brake pads or linings get too hot. Along with vapor lock, where brake fluid boils and forms bubbles, it tends to happen when the foot brake is overused on long descents.

  15. 165.What is the most appropriate way to check the engine oil level?

    1. Measure right after driving with the engine running
    2. Measure while parked on a slope
    3. On level ground, turn the engine off, wait a moment and see if the level is between the dipstick's upper and lower marks
    4. Judge only by the oil's color
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — On level ground, turn the engine off, wait a moment and see if the level is between the dipstick's upper and lower marks

Check the oil on level ground with the engine off, after waiting briefly for the oil to drain down, using the dipstick. Measuring on a slope or right after running the engine gives a misleading level.

  16. 166.Choose the 2 correct fuel-saving (eco-driving) habits.Choose 2

    1. Idle for a long time before setting off to warm up the engine
    2. Avoid sudden starts and hard acceleration; accelerate smoothly
    3. Change lanes often to find the fastest one
    4. Remove unnecessary items from the trunk
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② ④ — Avoid sudden starts and hard acceleration; accelerate smoothly / Remove unnecessary items from the trunk

Smooth acceleration and reducing weight are typical ways to cut fuel use. Long idling just burns fuel, and frequent lane changes add acceleration and braking, which hurts both economy and safety.

  17. 167.You see from far away that the traffic light ahead has turned red. How can you approach it safely while saving fuel?

    1. Lift off the accelerator early with the car in gear and slow down gradually
    2. Shift to neutral and roll quickly
    3. Accelerate until just before the stop line and brake hard
    4. Turn off the engine and roll
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Lift off the accelerator early with the car in gear and slow down gradually

Lifting off the accelerator early and slowing down in gear reduces fuel use and avoids hard braking. Rolling in neutral or with the engine off reduces control and is dangerous.

  18. 168.What is the most appropriate way to drive a modern passenger car after starting it in winter?

    1. Idle for 20 minutes or more until the engine is fully hot
    2. Accelerate hard right after starting to warm the engine
    3. Warm up briefly, then drive gently for the first while to warm it up
    4. No warm-up is ever needed in winter, so drive fast immediately
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Warm up briefly, then drive gently for the first while to warm it up

For modern cars, a short warm-up followed by gentle driving warms the engine efficiently without long idling. Long idling wastes fuel and increases emissions, and hard acceleration on a cold engine is also bad.

  19. 169.What is the feature that lets an electric or hybrid car run its motor as a generator to charge the battery when slowing down?

    1. Idle stop system
    2. Cruise control
    3. Lane keeping assist
    4. Regenerative braking
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ④ — Regenerative braking

Regenerative braking uses the wheels' kinetic energy during deceleration to turn the motor, generate electricity and store it in the battery. Slowing down gently and early recovers more energy and helps range.

  20. 170.When driving an electric car slowly through a residential alley, what requires special attention?

    1. Engine overheating
    2. The car is quiet, so pedestrians may not notice it approaching
    3. Gear-shift shock
    4. Exhaust smell
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — The car is quiet, so pedestrians may not notice it approaching

Electric cars make little noise at low speed, so pedestrians, especially children and older people, may notice them late. Even with an artificial driving sound, slow down and watch for pedestrians first.

  21. 171.Which describes a typical hybrid car correctly?

    1. It runs using both an engine and an electric motor
    2. It charges only from external power and runs only on a motor
    3. It makes electricity from hydrogen to run
    4. It has no engine and runs only on solar power
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — It runs using both an engine and an electric motor

A hybrid uses an internal combustion engine and an electric motor together or alternately depending on conditions. A car that charges externally and runs only on a motor is an electric car, and one that makes electricity from hydrogen is a hydrogen fuel-cell car.

  22. 172.In Korea, an EV charging space in an apartment parking lot is empty. What should the driver of a gasoline car do?

    1. Park there if it is only briefly
    2. Park there at night
    3. Not park in the charging space and use a regular parking space
    4. Park there with the hazard lights on
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Not park in the charging space and use a regular parking space

EV charging spaces are for vehicles that are charging, and parking a non-charging ordinary car there can bring an administrative fine under the relevant law. Use a regular space regardless of the time of day or hazard lights.

  23. 173.When helping at the scene of a crashed electric or hybrid car, what must you never touch?

    1. The driver's door handle
    2. The hazard light switch
    3. The injured person's hand
    4. The orange-insulated high-voltage cables
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ④ — The orange-insulated high-voltage cables

High-voltage wiring in electric and hybrid cars is usually marked in orange, and if damaged in a crash it poses a risk of electric shock. Do not touch these cables during a rescue, and tell 119 the type of vehicle.

  24. 174.When the wipers run, they leave streaks on the glass and make a juddering noise. What is the best fix?

    1. Spray washer fluid more often
    2. Replace the wiper blades (rubber)
    3. Set the wipers to maximum speed
    4. Rub cooking oil on the glass
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Replace the wiper blades (rubber)

Streaks and juddering indicate hardened or worn wiper rubber, so replace the blades. Visibility in rain directly affects safety, so do not put it off.

  25. 175.Which statement about windshield washer fluid in winter is correct?

    1. Use winter (antifreeze) washer fluid so it does not freeze
    2. Tap water alone is enough
    3. Leave the washer reservoir empty in winter
    4. Mix in engine oil
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Use winter (antifreeze) washer fluid so it does not freeze

Plain water can freeze below zero so it will not spray, or it can freeze on the glass and block your view. In winter, use a washer fluid with a low freezing point.

  26. 176.At night, you are driving with high beams on when a car approaches from the opposite direction. What should you do?

    1. Keep the high beams on to secure your view
    2. Flash the high beams several times to signal
    3. Switch to low beams to reduce glare for the other driver
    4. Turn off the headlights completely
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Switch to low beams to reduce glare for the other driver

When meeting an oncoming car at night, you must dim your headlights to low beam to avoid dazzling the other driver. Keeping or flashing high beams can blind them momentarily, and turning off the lights makes your car invisible.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 37

  27. 177.In Korea, you are about to enter a tunnel during the day. Which use of lights is correct?

    1. No lights are needed because it is daytime
    2. Turn on the headlights and tail lights before entering
    3. Turn on only the hazard lights
    4. Turn on the interior light
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Turn on the headlights and tail lights before entering

When driving in a tunnel, the headlights and tail lights must be on even in daytime, both to see and to be seen. Hazard lights are for signaling a breakdown or danger.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 37

  28. 178.What is the most appropriate use of lights when driving in thick fog?

    1. Turn on the high beams to light far ahead
    2. Turn off all lights and go slowly
    3. Turn on the interior light to brighten the dashboard
    4. Turn on the low beams and fog lights and slow down
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Turn on the low beams and fog lights and slow down

In fog, high beams reflect off the fog and make it even harder to see. Use low beams and fog lights so others can see you, slow down and keep a generous distance.

  29. 179.What is the correct way to brake in an emergency in a car equipped with ABS (anti-lock braking system)?

    1. Press the brake pedal hard all the way and hold it while steering to avoid the hazard
    2. Pump the pedal in several short presses
    3. Let go of the steering wheel and just brake
    4. Lift your foot as soon as the pedal vibrates
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Press the brake pedal hard all the way and hold it while steering to avoid the hazard

ABS automatically adjusts braking so the wheels do not lock, letting you steer even during hard braking. Pedal vibration is normal operation, so keep pressing firmly instead of lifting your foot.

  30. 180.When jump-starting a car with a dead battery using cables from another car, where is the last connection made?

    1. The + terminal of the dead battery
    2. The + terminal of the good battery
    3. An unpainted metal part such as the engine block of the car with the dead battery
    4. The + terminal of the good battery once more
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — An unpainted metal part such as the engine block of the car with the dead battery

The usual order is dead car +, good car +, good car -, and finally a metal ground point on the dead car. Because the last connection can spark, it is made away from the battery; follow the owner's manual if it says otherwise.

Crashes & emergencies 30

  1. 181.In Korea, you collide with another car at an intersection, and the other driver seems to be injured. What should you do first?

    1. Call your insurer to ask about fault percentages
    2. Stop immediately and check on and help the injured person
    3. Secure the dashcam footage first
    4. Agree on a settlement amount with the other driver
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Stop immediately and check on and help the injured person

After an accident with injuries, stopping immediately and helping the injured is both a legal duty and the top priority. Insurance claims, gathering evidence and settlements can come after helping and reporting.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 54

  2. 182.In Korea, when reporting an injury accident to the police, choose the 2 items that should be included.Choose 2

    1. Where the accident happened
    2. The other driver's occupation
    3. The purchase price of your car
    4. The number of injured people and how badly they are hurt
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① ④ — Where the accident happened / The number of injured people and how badly they are hurt

When reporting an accident, give the location, the number of casualties and the severity of injuries, what was damaged and how badly, and any other actions taken. The other person's job or the car's price are not part of the report.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 54

  3. 183.An injured person inside a crashed car complains of neck and back pain. There is no fire or risk of a secondary collision. What should you do?

    1. Pull them out right away and lay them on the ground
    2. Have them drink a lot of water
    3. Keep them from moving, call 119 and wait
    4. Help them stand up and try walking
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Keep them from moving, call 119 and wait

Moving someone who may have a neck or spinal injury can make the damage worse. Unless there is immediate danger such as fire or a secondary crash, keep them still and follow 119's instructions.

  4. 184.A minor fender-bender happens on an expressway. What is the most appropriate action to prevent a secondary accident?

    1. Stand next to the cars and argue about fault
    2. Sit in the car and wait for the insurance agent
    3. Spend a long time photographing the damage in the traffic lane
    4. Turn on the hazard lights, set up a warning triangle and move behind the guardrail
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Turn on the hazard lights, set up a warning triangle and move behind the guardrail

On expressways, many secondary accidents happen when following vehicles approach fast and hit the stopped cars or people. Warn others with hazard lights and a warning triangle, then move people to safety behind the guardrail and report from there.

  5. 185.While driving on an expressway, your car breaks down and you stop on the shoulder. Where should the driver and passengers be?

    1. Inside the car with seat belts on
    2. In a safe place away from the lanes, such as behind the guardrail
    3. Standing right behind the car waving
    4. In the lane, flagging down passing cars
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — In a safe place away from the lanes, such as behind the guardrail

Even a car on the shoulder can be hit by following traffic, so staying in or next to it is not safe. After warning others with hazard lights and a warning triangle, everyone should move away from the lanes, for example behind the guardrail.

  6. 186.When your car is stopped on the road due to a breakdown, where should the warning triangle be placed?

    1. Behind the car, far enough that approaching drivers can see it in advance
    2. On the front bumper of the car
    3. On the car's roof
    4. In the middle of the opposite lane
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Behind the car, far enough that approaching drivers can see it in advance

The warning triangle goes behind the broken-down car so approaching drivers can notice it early enough to avoid it. When placing it, walk along the edge rather than into the lane.

  7. 187.In Korea, your car breaks down and stops on an expressway at night. In addition to the warning triangle, what else should you do?

    1. Leave only the interior light on
    2. Turn off all headlights
    3. Set up a red flashing signal or flare that can be seen from far away
    4. Stand the triangle inside the car
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Set up a red flashing signal or flare that can be seen from far away

At night a warning triangle alone may be hard to see, so a red flashing signal, electric lamp or flare visible from a distance must also be set up. Keep the hazard lights on and move people to a safe place.

  8. 188.While driving in a tunnel, a vehicle catches fire ahead. Your car can still move and the road ahead is clear. What is the most appropriate action?

    1. Stop and watch from inside the car
    2. Reverse back to the entrance
    3. Close the windows and wait until the fire is out
    4. Carefully keep driving and exit the tunnel
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Carefully keep driving and exit the tunnel

If you can still drive during a tunnel fire, getting out of the tunnel is safest. Reversing in a tunnel risks hitting cars behind, and waiting in the car can leave you trapped in smoke.

  9. 189.A fire in a tunnel causes a jam, and you cannot drive out. What should you do?

    1. Lock the doors and wait in the car for rescue
    2. Pull onto the shoulder, turn off the engine, leave the key in the car and evacuate to an emergency exit
    3. Take the key with you to protect the car
    4. Stop in the middle of the tunnel and honk
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Pull onto the shoulder, turn off the engine, leave the key in the car and evacuate to an emergency exit

If you cannot drive out, pull to the shoulder, turn off the engine and leave the key so firefighters can move the car, then evacuate on foot to an emergency exit or cross-passage. Staying in the car is dangerous because of smoke.

  10. 190.What is the correct way to evacuate on foot during a tunnel fire?

    1. Move away from the smoke, staying low, toward an emergency exit or cross-passage
    2. Go toward the smoke to check the fire
    3. Hide under a car
    4. Get into the nearest car
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Move away from the smoke, staying low, toward an emergency exit or cross-passage

Smoke spreads fast and is toxic, so move away from it, keep low, cover your nose and mouth, and follow the emergency exit signs. Under a car or inside another car offers no escape from smoke.

  11. 191.While driving, smoke and a burning smell start coming from the gap around the hood. What is the most appropriate action?

    1. Hurry on to your destination
    2. Open the hood wide and look inside
    3. Stop in a safe place, turn off the engine, get everyone well away from the car and call 119
    4. Search the car for water
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Stop in a safe place, turn off the engine, get everyone well away from the car and call 119

If you suspect a vehicle fire, stop safely, turn off the engine, move everyone far away first, then report it. Suddenly opening the hood wide lets in air and can make the fire flare up.

  12. 192.You find a person collapsed on the street. They do not respond when you tap their shoulders and call out, and they are not breathing normally. What should you do next?

    1. Give them water to drink
    2. Call 119, ask someone to bring an AED (automated external defibrillator), and start chest compressions
    3. Watch for about 30 minutes until they wake up
    4. Carry them to a hospital on your back
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Call 119, ask someone to bring an AED (automated external defibrillator), and start chest compressions

No response and no normal breathing should be treated as cardiac arrest: call 119 immediately, ask for an AED and begin chest compressions. Brain damage progresses quickly while you wait, so do not delay.

  13. 193.When giving chest compressions to an adult, where should you place your hands?

    1. Just above the navel
    2. At the end of the left ribs
    3. Between the collarbones below the neck
    4. The center of the chest (lower half of the breastbone)
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — The center of the chest (lower half of the breastbone)

Place the heels of your stacked hands on the center of the chest, on the lower half of the breastbone, and press with straight arms. Pressing on the abdomen or rib ends is ineffective and can injure organs.

  14. 194.In adult CPR, what is the correct rate of chest compressions?

    1. 30-50 per minute
    2. 60-80 per minute
    3. 100-120 per minute
    4. 150-180 per minute
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — 100-120 per minute

Chest compressions should be given at 100 to 120 per minute without interruption. Too slow does not circulate enough blood, and too fast does not give the heart time to refill.

  15. 195.What is the appropriate depth of chest compressions for an adult?

    1. About 1 cm
    2. About 5 cm
    3. About 10 cm
    4. Depth does not matter
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — About 5 cm

For an adult, press hard enough to push the chest down about 5 cm, and let it rise fully after each compression. Compressions that are too shallow do not move enough blood.

  16. 196.In adult CPR with rescue breaths, what is the ratio of chest compressions to breaths?

    1. 30 compressions to 2 breaths
    2. 5 compressions to 1 breath
    3. 15 compressions to 5 breaths
    4. 2 compressions to 30 breaths
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① — 30 compressions to 2 breaths

If you can give rescue breaths, repeat cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths. If breaths are difficult or you are not confident, continuous chest compressions alone are fine.

  17. 197.A bystander with no CPR training, not confident about giving rescue breaths, finds a person in cardiac arrest. What is the most appropriate action?

    1. Do nothing because they cannot give rescue breaths
    2. Only shake the person to wake them
    3. Massage the person's legs until paramedics arrive
    4. Call 119 and keep doing chest compressions alone until paramedics arrive
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Call 119 and keep doing chest compressions alone until paramedics arrive

Even without rescue breaths, continuous chest compressions greatly improve the chance of survival compared with doing nothing. The 119 dispatcher will guide you over the phone, so follow their instructions.

  18. 198.When an AED (automated external defibrillator) announces 'Analyzing heart rhythm', what should you do?

    1. Continue chest compressions
    2. Remove the pads and reattach them
    3. Take your hands off and make sure no one touches the patient
    4. Roll the patient onto their side
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Take your hands off and make sure no one touches the patient

Touching the patient while the AED analyzes or delivers a shock can make the analysis inaccurate or give you a shock. After the analysis, follow the voice prompts to press the shock button or resume compressions immediately.

  19. 199.When helping someone bleeding heavily from the arm after an accident, what is the first aid to give first?

    1. Press firmly directly on the wound with a clean cloth or gauze
    2. Rinse the wound under running water for a long time
    3. Cover the wound with soil
    4. Have the injured person run to a hospital
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Press firmly directly on the wound with a clean cloth or gauze

For external bleeding, the basic step is to press directly on the wound with a clean cloth or gauze. If blood soaks through, do not remove the cloth; add more on top, keep pressing and wait for 119.

  20. 200.In Korea, near an intersection, an ambulance with its siren and lights on approaches from behind. What should you do?

    1. Stop right where you are in the middle of the intersection
    2. Avoid the intersection and stop temporarily at the right edge of the road
    3. Speed up to get ahead of the ambulance
    4. Block the lane and turn on the hazard lights
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Avoid the intersection and stop temporarily at the right edge of the road

When an emergency vehicle approaches at or near an intersection, you must avoid the intersection and stop temporarily at the right edge of the road (or the left edge on a one-way road if the right would obstruct it). Stopping inside the intersection blocks the emergency vehicle's path.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 29

  21. 201.In Korea, you are driving on a road with two lanes in each direction, not at an intersection, when a fire engine approaches from behind with its siren on. What should you do?

    1. Close the gap to the car ahead so it cannot cut in
    2. Stop suddenly where you are
    3. Follow closely behind the fire engine
    4. Slow down and move out of its way so it can pass first
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Slow down and move out of its way so it can pass first

Away from intersections, you must yield the way so the emergency vehicle can pass first. Stopping suddenly can cause a rear-end collision, and tailgating an emergency vehicle is also dangerous.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 29

  22. 202.In Korea, which is correct about a fire engine returning to the station after putting out a fire, with its lights and siren off?

    1. All cars must stop and give way
    2. It may pass through red lights
    3. Since it is not on an emergency mission, it follows signals and traffic rules like an ordinary vehicle
    4. It may drive across the center line
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Since it is not on an emergency mission, it follows signals and traffic rules like an ordinary vehicle

An emergency vehicle's priority and special exemptions apply, in principle, when it is on an urgent mission with its lights and siren on. When returning after the mission, it follows traffic rules like any other vehicle.

  23. 203.While driving at high speed, a front tire suddenly bursts with a bang. What is the correct response?

    1. Grip the wheel firmly with both hands, avoid hard braking, slow down gradually and stop in a safe place
    2. Slam the brakes all the way at once
    3. Turn the wheel sharply the opposite way
    4. Accelerate to reach the shoulder quickly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Grip the wheel firmly with both hands, avoid hard braking, slow down gradually and stop in a safe place

A blowout pulls the car to one side, so hold the wheel firmly to keep direction, lift off the accelerator and slow down gradually. Hard braking or sharp steering can make the car spin or roll over.

  24. 204.On a downhill road, the car does not slow down well even when you press the brake pedal. What is the most appropriate response?

    1. Turn off the engine
    2. Shift to neutral
    3. Shift to a lower gear for engine braking and apply the parking brake gradually
    4. Swing the steering wheel widely left and right
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Shift to a lower gear for engine braking and apply the parking brake gradually

If the brakes fail, use engine braking in a low gear and apply the parking brake gradually to slow down. Turning off the engine makes steering and brake assistance heavy, and neutral only increases speed.

  25. 205.Heavy rain begins to flood the road, and water is about to enter the car. What is the most appropriate action?

    1. Wait in the car until the water recedes
    2. Turn on the air conditioner and close the windows
    3. Drive quickly through the deeper water
    4. Get out of the car right away, before the water rises further, and move to higher ground
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Get out of the car right away, before the water rises further, and move to higher ground

As water rises, water pressure keeps the doors from opening, so get out early and move to higher ground. If a door will not open, break a window, or escape when the water levels inside and outside equalize and the door opens.

  26. 206.While driving, an earthquake makes the ground shake strongly. What should you do?

    1. Speed up to leave the area quickly
    2. Slow down gradually, stop on the right side of the road, and if you evacuate, leave the key in the car and go on foot
    3. Stop in the middle of an intersection
    4. Lock the doors and stay in the car no matter what
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Slow down gradually, stop on the right side of the road, and if you evacuate, leave the key in the car and go on foot

If an earthquake strikes while driving, avoid sudden stops; slow down gradually and pull over to the right side of the road. If you leave the car to evacuate, leave the key in it and the doors unlocked so it can be moved for emergency vehicles.

  27. 207.A minor accident with only property damage and no injuries happens on a busy road. What is an appropriate action to prevent a secondary accident?

    1. Record the scene with photos, then move the cars to a safe place
    2. Never move the cars until the insurance agent arrives
    3. Talk with the other driver in the middle of the lane
    4. Leave immediately without any record
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Record the scene with photos, then move the cars to a safe place

For a minor accident without injuries, it is best to record the positions and damage with photos or video, then move the cars to a safe place such as the shoulder to prevent secondary accidents and congestion. Do not leave without exchanging contact details.

  28. 208.On a wet road, the rear of the car begins to slide to the right. What is the generally recommended control action?

    1. Brake hard and steer sharply to the left
    2. Press the accelerator all the way
    3. Avoid hard braking and steer gently toward the side the rear is sliding (right) to straighten the car
    4. Take your hands off the wheel
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Avoid hard braking and steer gently toward the side the rear is sliding (right) to straighten the car

When the rear wheels skid, the usual technique is to avoid hard braking and steer smoothly in the direction the rear is sliding to straighten the car. Hard braking or steering sharply the other way tends to make the car spin.

  29. 209.You see fuel leaking from under a crashed car. What should you do?

    1. Light a lighter to check the fuel
    2. Wait nearby while smoking
    3. Try restarting the crashed car
    4. Keep anything that could spark away, turn off the engine if possible, move people to a distance and report it
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Keep anything that could spark away, turn off the engine if possible, move people to a distance and report it

Leaked fuel can ignite from even a small spark, so keep ignition sources away, turn off the engine if possible, move people to a safe distance and notify 119. Restarting the engine can also cause a spark.

  30. 210.In Korea, after you call 119 to report a person in cardiac arrest, the dispatcher tells you not to hang up. What should you do?

    1. Hang up and just wait for the ambulance
    2. Keep the call going on speakerphone and do chest compressions as the dispatcher guides you
    3. Hang up to contact the patient's family first
    4. Put the patient in your car and drive to the hospital yourself
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Keep the call going on speakerphone and do chest compressions as the dispatcher guides you

The 119 dispatcher guides you over the phone on how and how fast to do chest compressions. Keeping the call on speakerphone lets you press with both hands while listening, so you can help effectively until paramedics arrive.

  1. 211.In Korea, what driver's license is needed to ride a personal mobility device such as an electric kick scooter on the road?

    1. No license is needed
    2. A bicycle-safety course certificate
    3. A motorized bicycle (moped) license or higher
    4. Only a Class 1 Large license
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — A motorized bicycle (moped) license or higher

In Korea, personal mobility devices require a motorized bicycle license or a higher license (such as a Class 1 or Class 2 Ordinary). Riding without one is punished as unlicensed driving.

  2. 212.In Korea, what is the age requirement for riding a personal mobility device?

    1. 13 or older
    2. 16 or older (the age at which a motorized bicycle license can be obtained)
    3. 18 or older
    4. 20 or older
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — 16 or older (the age at which a motorized bicycle license can be obtained)

Riding a personal mobility device requires a motorized bicycle license or higher, which can be obtained from age 16. So anyone under 16 cannot ride one.

  3. 213.In Korea, what is the passenger capacity of an electric kick scooter?

    1. 1 person
    2. 2 people
    3. 3 people
    4. 1 adult and 1 child
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① — 1 person

An electric kick scooter has a capacity of one person, so riding two-up is a violation. With two riders the balance is upset and the braking distance grows, making falls more likely.

  4. 214.In Korea, you rent a shared electric kick scooter for a short trip. Which statement about helmets is correct?

    1. No helmet is needed for a short distance
    2. No helmet is needed on a bicycle path
    3. A helmet is needed only at night
    4. The rider must wear a helmet regardless of distance
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — The rider must wear a helmet regardless of distance

Personal mobility riders must wear protective gear (a helmet) on the road regardless of distance or place. Head injuries are common in falls, so short trips are no exception.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 50

  5. 215.In Korea, where should an electric kick scooter generally travel?

    1. On the sidewalk where people walk
    2. In the leftmost lane of the roadway
    3. On the bicycle path if there is one; otherwise at the right edge of the roadway
    4. On the crosswalk
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — On the bicycle path if there is one; otherwise at the right edge of the roadway

Personal mobility devices are classed with bicycles, so they use a bicycle path where one exists and otherwise keep to the right edge of the road. Riding on the sidewalk is prohibited in principle.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 13-2

  6. 216.In Korea, choose the 2 correct requirements for a personal mobility device under the Road Traffic Act.Choose 2

    1. Top speed below 25 km/h
    2. Vehicle weight below 30 kg
    3. Top speed below 50 km/h
    4. Vehicle weight below 50 kg
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ① ② — Top speed below 25 km/h / Vehicle weight below 30 kg

A personal mobility device is a designated type of motorized bicycle (such as an electric kick scooter) whose motor stops working at 25 km/h or above and whose weight is under 30 kg. 50 km/h and 50 kg are not the standards.

    3. Cross regardless of the signal
    4. Get off and walk or carry the bicycle across
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Get off and walk or carry the bicycle across

When riders of bicycles or personal mobility devices use a crosswalk, they must get off and walk the device or carry it. Riding across risks hitting pedestrians, and in an accident the rider may not be protected as a pedestrian.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 13-2

    2. Drunk riding is also prohibited on scooters and is punished
    3. It is fine on the sidewalk
    4. It is fine if ridden slowly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Drunk riding is also prohibited on scooters and is punished

The ban on drunk driving covers personal mobility devices as well as cars, so riding after drinking is punished. These devices require balance, so the risk of falling is also high after drinking.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 44

  9. 219.In Korea, which statement about riding a bicycle after drinking is correct?

    1. Bicycles are not covered by the law
    2. It is allowed on bicycle paths
    3. Drunk riding is prohibited on bicycles too and is punishable
    4. It is allowed in daytime
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Drunk riding is prohibited on bicycles too and is punishable

    3. Only the passenger needs one
    4. No helmet is needed below 30 km/h
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Both the rider and the passenger must wear helmets

    2. It may use only the rightmost lane
    3. It may use it only at night
    4. It may not use the expressway
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — It may not use the expressway

In Korea, only cars may use expressways and motorways; motorcycles are allowed only when they are emergency vehicles. Ordinary motorcycles are barred regardless of engine size, lane or time.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 63

  12. 222.In Korea, what engine-displacement limit makes a combustion-engine two-wheeler a motorized bicycle (moped) under the Road Traffic Act?

    1. 50 cc or less
    2. 125 cc or less
    3. 250 cc or less
    4. 500 cc or less
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ② — 125 cc or less

Two-wheelers of 125 cc or less (or electric ones with a rated output of 11 kW or less) are motorized bicycles. Two-wheelers over 125 cc are motorcycles and require a Class 2 Small license.

  13. 223.In Korea, what license is needed to ride a 250 cc motorcycle?

    1. Motorized bicycle license
    2. Class 2 Ordinary license
    3. Class 2 Small license
    4. No license is needed
    Answer & explanation

    Answer: ③ — Class 2 Small license

Motorcycles over 125 cc require a Class 2 Small license. A Class 1 or 2 Ordinary license or a motorized bicycle license only covers two-wheelers up to 125 cc.

  14. 224.In Korea, what can a person holding only a Class 2 Ordinary license drive?

    1. A motorized bicycle (including personal mobility devices such as electric kick scooters)
    2. A 250 cc motorcycle
    3. A 36-seat large bus
    4. A large tow truck
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — A motorized bicycle (including personal mobility devices such as electric kick scooters)

A Class 2 Ordinary license covers motorized bicycles, including personal mobility devices, along with passenger cars and similar vehicles. Motorcycles over 125 cc, large buses and tow trucks each require a different license.

  15. 225.In Korea, what is correct when riding a bicycle on the road at night?

    1. No lights are needed where there are streetlights
    2. Ride while shining a phone flashlight
    3. Wear black clothes so you do not stand out
    4. Turn on a headlight and tail light, or wear a light-emitting device such as a reflective band
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Turn on a headlight and tail light, or wear a light-emitting device such as a reflective band

Cyclists on the road at night must turn on a headlight and tail light, or wear a light-emitting device such as a glow band. This is not only to see ahead but also so that cars can notice the bicycle.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 50

  16. 226.In Korea, choose the 2 cases in which a bicycle may use the sidewalk.Choose 2

    1. When the roadway is jammed and you want to go faster
    2. When a child or an older person is riding the bicycle
    3. When a safety sign permits bicycles on that sidewalk
    4. Early in the morning when there are few pedestrians
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② ③ — When a child or an older person is riding the bicycle / When a safety sign permits bicycles on that sidewalk

Bicycles generally use the roadway, but they may use the sidewalk when ridden by children, older people or people with physical disabilities, when a safety sign allows it, or when the roadway is hard to use because of damage or similar reasons. Traffic jams or few pedestrians are not valid reasons.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 13-2

  17. 227.In Korea, an older person rides a bicycle on the sidewalk as permitted. What is the correct way to ride?

    1. Ride fast anywhere on the sidewalk
    2. Ring the bell to make pedestrians move aside
    3. Ride slowly on the roadway side of the sidewalk's center or the designated part, and stop temporarily if it would obstruct pedestrians
    4. Ride close to the buildings on the innermost side
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Ride slowly on the roadway side of the sidewalk's center or the designated part, and stop temporarily if it would obstruct pedestrians

Even when sidewalk riding is allowed, a bicycle must move slowly on the roadway side of the sidewalk's center or the part designated by a safety sign, and stop temporarily when it would obstruct pedestrians. Remember that the sidewalk belongs to pedestrians.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 13-2

  18. 228.In Korea, two friends are each riding a bicycle on the roadway. What is the correct way to ride?

    1. Ride in single file, one behind the other
    2. Ride side by side to chat
    3. One rides in the center of the lane and the other at the edge
    4. Take turns overtaking each other
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Ride in single file, one behind the other

Except where a safety sign allows it, cyclists must not ride two or more abreast on the roadway. Riding in single file lets cars approaching from behind pass safely.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 13-2

  19. 229.In Korea, you are riding a bicycle and want to turn left at an intersection with traffic lights. What is the correct method?

    1. Enter the leftmost lane and turn left with the cars
    2. Cut diagonally across the middle of the intersection
    3. Ride up onto the sidewalk and go around
    4. Move to the right edge in advance, go slowly, and turn by going straight twice along the edge of the intersection
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Move to the right edge in advance, go slowly, and turn by going straight twice along the edge of the intersection

When turning left at an intersection, a bicycle must move to the right edge of the road in advance, go slowly and use the edge of the intersection (a so-called hook turn). Turning from the left lane like a car or cutting diagonally across is very dangerous.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 25

  20. 230.In Korea, a bicycle crossing is marked next to a pedestrian crosswalk. What is the correct way for a cyclist to cross?

    1. Always get off and walk the bicycle across the pedestrian crosswalk
    2. Ride across on the bicycle crossing
    3. Cross on the bicycle crossing regardless of the signal
    4. Cross on the line between the crosswalk and the bicycle crossing
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Ride across on the bicycle crossing

A bicycle crossing is marked specifically so that cyclists can cross the road while riding, so you may ride across following the signal. On an ordinary pedestrian crosswalk without one, you must get off and walk the bicycle.

  21. 231.In Korea, when riding a bicycle on a road without a bicycle path, where should you ride?

    1. At the left edge, facing oncoming traffic
    2. In the middle of the lane
    3. Close to the right edge of the road
    4. Along the center line
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Close to the right edge of the road

Without a bicycle path, a bicycle must keep close to the right edge of the road. Riding against traffic on the left creates a high risk of head-on collisions.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 13-2

  22. 232.In Korea, on a road with one lane in each direction, a car wants to pass a bicycle ahead. What is the correct way to drive?

    1. Slow down, leave plenty of side clearance and pass when it is safe
    2. Sound the horn long to make it move aside
    3. Pass quickly, squeezing right next to the bicycle
    4. Tailgate the bicycle to pressure the rider
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Slow down, leave plenty of side clearance and pass when it is safe

Bicycles fall easily from small impacts and can wobble even from the wind of a passing car, so slow down and give plenty of side clearance when passing. Startling the rider with the horn or squeezing close invites accidents.

  23. 233.In Korea, which statement about bicycle helmets is correct?

    1. Only children need to wear them
    2. They are not needed on bicycle-only paths
    3. They are needed only at night
    4. When riding on the road, both the rider and any passenger are required to wear them
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — When riding on the road, both the rider and any passenger are required to wear them

The Road Traffic Act requires cyclists to wear a helmet on the road and to have any passenger wear one as well. Regardless of age, type of road or time, protecting your head is the safe choice.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 50

  24. 234.In Korea, you are about to ride an electric kick scooter on the road at night. Which statement about lights is correct?

    1. Scooters have no lighting obligation
    2. You must turn on a headlight and tail light, or wear a light-emitting device such as a reflective band
    3. Turn them off on roads with streetlights
    4. Turning on only hazard lights is enough
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — You must turn on a headlight and tail light, or wear a light-emitting device such as a reflective band

Riders of bicycles and personal mobility devices must turn on a headlight and tail light, or wear a light-emitting device, when on the road at night. Scooters are small and especially hard to see in the dark.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 50

  25. 235.In Korea, a 12-year-old child wants to ride a shared electric kick scooter. What is the correct decision for the parent?

    1. Let the child ride if the parent runs alongside
    2. Let the child ride on a roadway next to a park
    3. Do not let the child ride a personal mobility device on the road
    4. Let the child ride as long as they wear a helmet
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — Do not let the child ride a personal mobility device on the road

Personal mobility devices require a motorized bicycle license or higher, which is available only from age 16, and the Road Traffic Act also prohibits guardians from letting a child ride one on the road. Wearing a helmet or having the parent nearby does not change this.

  26. 236.In Korea, an adult university student with no license rents a shared electric kick scooter and rides it on the road. What is this?

    1. Fine, because the student is an adult
    2. Fine, because the student signed up for the sharing app
    3. Fine, if a helmet was worn
    4. Unlicensed driving, which is punishable
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Unlicensed driving, which is punishable

Personal mobility devices require a motorized bicycle license or higher regardless of age, so riding without one is unlicensed driving. Signing up for an app or wearing a helmet does not replace a license.

  27. 237.In Korea, you are about to turn right at an intersection in a car. A bicycle or motorcycle may be coming straight from behind on your right. What should you do?

    1. Check behind on the right with the side mirror and over your shoulder, and let any bicycle or motorcycle going straight pass first
    2. Turn right away once the turn signal is on
    3. Ignore bicycles because they are not cars
    4. Speed up to turn quickly
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ① — Check behind on the right with the side mirror and over your shoulder, and let any bicycle or motorcycle going straight pass first

When turning right, the area behind on your right is a blind spot, so collisions with bicycles or motorcycles going straight are common. Check with the mirrors and by turning your head, and let any bicycle or motorcycle going straight pass first.

  28. 238.When riding a motorcycle, what is the most appropriate way to be easily seen by other drivers?

    1. Ride in the blind spot right behind the car ahead
    2. Keep the headlight on even in daytime and wear bright clothing or reflective material
    3. Weave quickly between cars
    4. Ride with the headlight off at night
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ② — Keep the headlight on even in daytime and wear bright clothing or reflective material

Motorcycles are small and other drivers tend to spot them late, so keeping the headlight on in daytime and wearing bright or reflective gear lowers the risk of a crash. Staying in blind spots or weaving between cars is dangerous.

  29. 239.In Korea, a motorcycle rider holds a smartphone and operates the navigation screen while riding. Which statement is correct?

    1. Motorcycles have no restrictions on phone use
    2. Briefly is fine even when not stopped at a signal
    3. It violates the ban on using a phone while driving
    4. It is fine if the rider can steer with one hand
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ③ — It violates the ban on using a phone while driving

The ban on using a phone while driving also applies to motorcycle riders. Motorcycles need both hands on the handlebars to keep balance and brake, so one-handed riding is especially dangerous.

Legal basis: Road Traffic Act Article 49

  30. 240.You are about to ride an electric kick scooter down a long downhill road. What is the safest way?

    1. Speed up to enjoy the speed
    2. Ride down while looking at a phone with one hand
    3. Drag your foot on the ground to slow down
    4. Hold the handlebars with both hands and slow down in advance as you go down
    Answer & explanation

Answer: ④ — Hold the handlebars with both hands and slow down in advance as you go down

Electric kick scooters have small wheels, so at speed even a small bump or groove can cause a fall. Hold the handlebars with both hands and reduce speed before the descent; dragging a foot to stop throws off your balance and is dangerous.
